I was a BBS Sysop for years. Started out with Desqview/X for most of my boards. I wanted to go to OS/2 because it seemed superior. I went to the local computer store and there was an IBM bundle straight from IBM: IBM/Alaris SLC266 Mobo + Mitsumi CDRom and controller + a copy of OS/2 Warp for line $199, I think it was. KILLER deal at the time, so I bought it. After much fighting and fidgeting with it, I just couldn't get it working, so I started the phone support train to figure out what was happening. Turns out that the Alaris chipset was incompatible with OS/2 and the Mitsumi drive was also incompatible with OS/2. OS/2 didn't die because it wasn't superior (still see it in the IBM P-series controllers today). It failed because the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing, and they were stupid enough to ship out 3 items in a bundle, none of which worked with each other. I had to wait months to get drivers from IBM, Mitsumi, and Alaris to make everything work together, and it still was never quite right.

It didn't help that OS/2 ran Windows better than Windows could run itself, so there never got to be an ecosystem independent of Microsoft

Once I got it all ironed out, I had 10 BBS instances running 10 landlines via a Digiboard concentrator. That was a sweet symphony of v.42bis

You need to stop cross-posting to literally every Slack channel you can find. Posting like this pisses people off and shows you don’t have the judgement to be a stable employee. Targeted and stategic posting is a much better way to go. (Context: this guy cross posted into two other groups I’m in not related to Puppet OR software engineering in the least)

We have an opening on my team at Harvard. I’m looking for someone with cloud and hybrid architecture experience, who can lead projects, drive progress, and is able to mentor folks. If those things sound familiar and appealing to you and you’re interested in working around supercomputing resources to enable science, please let me know. This is a full time hybrid position, though realistically, we only have in person meetings about once a quarter, so working remotely from US states on Harvard’s list is fine. Harvard uses pay grades. This position is a grade 58, so the top end of the range is $150k. The job listing is here. I’m happy to discuss specifics and answer questions any time.
