Stacker Customers

I seem to remember having this issue previously and in my scenario at least it was because I had multiple users in Airtable which had the same email address, whereas Stacker only creates users with unique email addresses. Perhaps worth checking.

You should be able to do this by setting up a table in your base with all of the users information, email, etc. 

Sync your data &amp; then go to the “manage users” menu in stacker, and look for the option to connect a table as your user list. Everyone on that table should now be able to use that associated email address to register for your app. Just send them your app URL &amp; let them self serve.

Hi Sara, just so I'm clear, is it a Zap you want to trigger or a webhook?

1. If it's a Zap, you can link the Zap directly to a Stacker action button so when you click the button it triggers the document / email automation
2. If it's a webhook, you can also do it via Zapier, just a slightly different

Yes and it has to be a silent post, i.e. a curl command. You can do this by creating a calculated field for the URL in Airtable and then configure the URL as a button in Stacker. But this will give you the webhook response which confused my users. The only clean way to do this at present is to use an action button that sets a field, and then configure an automation in Airtable, which will give you your record or project that you need. I have run out of automations in Airtable, so I fully support the request for this Webhook Action Button.

It depends on the version of Stacker that you’re using.
But for any newer version, you won’t be able to store those links in Airtable automatically (auto-sync is only available on Upgraded Apps)

<@U042WE87DGU> Login links aren’t available on the newest version of Stacker. That said, we could perhaps turn on Customer Access for you depending on your configuration. I still have apps running with Customer Access enabled too and was wondering if you could post some news on the future “grand unification” plans that harmonize these versions?

We actually have this problem with a relationship field as well. where in an edge case on a contact logging table a user added 30 people to the relationship field and this than broke the layout. ideally it should show the first 2-3 and then say x more. maybe if you click it it shows a popover of list of the others.

Have been trying to get Stacker to wake up and smell the roses with respect to conditional &amp; filtered lookup of related records in form view. It’s something that Their competition over at Noloco is doing so it should be doable in Stacker too.

I workaround this by creating an additional table of “pick list” values - each value of the picklist is then linked to the father pick list items. Case: We have 5000 colors, but only 60 screen print inks - so I have 2 tables, 1 for all colors and 3 more for Screen Print, Embroidery and InkJet

<@U03QRR8AXT2> If you create a status on your staff page that distinguishes active vs. inactive, then you could filter out users with that status. I have an application that hides users in the pulldown that are not met by the conditions.

Got it! My app is built on top of Airtable. My use case is to build an "Add to Favorites" button. So if a customer clicks the button on a product, I want to go back to that product's record on Airtable and tie the user's name to it.

<@U03B50D2JE4> I built a “favorites” page on an app for a design operation. In our case, the user clicks on favorite and it assigns that product to his or her record in airtable. Then I created a second page that shows “Favorites” which can only be viewed by the user that record is assigned to. Hope this helps!

PostHog will help on the analytics side (see who clicked on a specific button, over time) but won’t help for reacting to such clicks, this would require either custom JS, or better, an airtable automation. From what I can read above, seems doable with an Airtable automation in this case.

I’ve seen this happen in some cases when there are multiple google accounts logged into the same browser, or if that specific account has some very strict security policies.

It’s not an issue specific to Stacker—there are a lot of apps with similar threads when it comes to Google Auth.

That said, it is always possible that it is something on our end, so definitely please get in touch.

Here ya go. The header text is centered. I see controls to insert bold… italics… blockquote… strikethrough even. But no left justify. A baffling oversight.

But… this seems like a super-basic control. I feel like whatever library you used to put those controls on the Header field probably has this control there and you just need to reveal it.

I haven’t seen other reports like that. What’s happening exactly? Knowing the error might help narrow down the cause.

We are uploading documents to a record and for some reason cannot. Could this have to do with Airtable?

If you’re using Airtable data and some permissions are off, you may not be able to write the data to it. What is happening exactly?

Not without javascript - if I was you, I would create a training object - and action buttons that hold the embedded video and 1 question that ensures they watched the video. They can then submit the response and youll have record of their comprehension and viewing

As in send a webhook with the Airtable record ID included? You should be able to do it via Zapier, I think (but not tested yet!)

But what I'm after is sending the user's record ID when they click a record (let's call it an event).

Ahhh, as in the ID of the current logged in user? If that's the question I don't believe it's currently possible - there's a related Canny post <https://stacker.canny.io/feature-requests/p/user-activity-log-track-user-logins-access-and-app-stats|here> about tracking user activity, if you wanted to add more context that would be helpful.

Sure thing. Might do this in a few posts so the messages make more sense with the images.

First step was to make a webhook on Make, and stick its link in an Airtable formula field with the Record ID function.

Next thing is to make an automation so that the formula fields populates a specific URL field with the webhook URL + record ID when a record is created.

The webhook URL field gets displayed as a button in Stacker.

Then I used the below workflow in Make, which:

• Receives the record ID when the button is pressed in Stacker
• Finds that specific record back in Airtable
• Then uses the array aggregator to select which specific fields to copy (in this case, it's all the non-automated fields which users can see and edit in my Stacker app)
• Then creates a new record in Airtable, mapping/copying the array data exactly.
• Then refreshes the page in the Stacker app for the user, so that they can see there's been a response. 

Notes:
• As the button is made by an automation after the creation of the record, users can't actually use it for up to 15 minutes due to Stacker's data refresh rate.
• It's the same with any records they copy - they go straight into Airtable, but won't appear in Stacker for up to 15 minutes.
• I wasn't able to figure out how to copy attachments, nor could I exactly figure out how to copy checkbox fields or single selects - so I either changed them to text values (single line, rich text or linked records), or created what I call functional or "admin" fields in Airtable which populate with text via an automation when my users fill out the "actual" single select/checkbox fields. I mapped these in the Make workflow, then have some more automations in Airtable to fill out the "actual" values from the admin fields. 

So, not necessarily pretty - although it'd be much better if that immediate data refresh gets implemented :wink: - but it does work.

And this is what my users will see when I enable the button (apologies, we're a very purple charity)

I keep on trying out NocoDB every year, misses too many things compared to Airtable (last time I checked), but I’m definitely looking forward to use it in the future.

Why would I shift to using nocoDB over airtable - purely the realtime sync issue?

Main point is you can edit the ui introducing your own stuff.

So not a replacement for Airtable. It would be a replacement for everything. Typeform, Airtable and Stacker.

But it will be a lot of work :wink:

<@U02G1V7KTB6> Definitely make your voice heard if Postgres supoprt is important to you.  It’s a big big concern of mine and I know others as well.  Without it there’s a natural point where you simply outgrow Airtable and have to leave Stacker too.

I couldn’t agree more. I can see this potentially being the stumbling block that defines our journey with our current airtable/stacker stack.

After chatting to the team, we would actually love to hear a bit more about this request.

• How close do Stacker tables get to what you need from Postgres?
• What features are you missing most in Stacker tables to make it a good replacement for Postgres?

Postgre isn’t simply a database system, it’s an ecosystem. By using postgre, we get access to a million other things (pg_extensions, tools, etc.).
Stacker Tables are a closed-system, we can’t connect other tools to it, AFAIK.
With postgre, we could run migrations automatically, have different environments (staging, prod, “feature-branch”) and spawn/update them in an automated way.
It’s hard to compare both, they’re really different.

Strengths of Stacker Tables are, simplicity, it’s embedded within Stacker, hard to break, could lead to Stacker-specific features, scalability (no records limit).

“Simple” things like reordering columns, add column description (documentation), migrate column type, duplicate a column, create views, all of this are things that we have with Airtable, and most of them are technically possible with Postgre, but aren’t possible with Stacker Tables.

This is pretty much right. Stacker tables are very far from a proper Postgres db. The biggest thing is any sort of API or scripting isn't possible with Stacker Tables. 

You can't run a query, you can't write any sort of script, you can't use it with other software (eg a data visualization tool). 

Postgres has a vast ecosystem and significant support that unlock a huge layer of sophistication that you just can't achieve with Stacker Tables (or even Airtable for that matter)

I think the team at Stacker tends to prioritize features that someone who doesn't know how to code could use. 

I get that, but I think the reality is that there are a lot of developers (or people like me who know a little bit of code) who are looking at these tools to make their work way more efficient.  I'd wager this is actually a pretty fast growing segment (devopers who use low code tools) and their needs revolve around marrying existing standards (Postgres, restful api, etc) with the low code software.  

Funny that you should mention that, I have two webinars coming about explaining to devs how no-code can help them - more and more devs are interested in learning, indeed.

I can’t really add much to what has been said above. Ecosystem is probably the most important point.

For us we often find our clients need some sort of basic crud app in support of the actual unique value prop they are wanting to test. Connecting to Postgres would mean that we could build an internal tool for CRUD functionality. While then building a bespoke app off the same database that tests the market hypothesis.

I currently do not use Stacker tables and just hook up to Airtable. We also use firebase functions to extract data from Airtable into Firestore and on to Big Query and Google Looker for BI.

The goal is to have all client business critical data in Firestore to maximise our long term data sovereignty.

IMO stacker is always going to struggle to sell “host your critical business data on stacker” to any scaling business that has a CTO that understands the importance of Data and owning and controlling your own DB. Therefor Stacker should pivot and pitch that its not the data “host” but the data “interface”.

My 2 cents on what I’d do with the company

PS Luke was a client of ours. He would be a really really good example of a business that is coming up to a point where it makes a lot of sense to to move away from Airtable and Stacker. But the point is it doesn’t have to be Airtable AND Stacker. It could just be Airtable if Stacker supported SQL database connections, why because moving away from Airtable will likely be to SQL.

In other words atm when businesses outgrow Airtable they also outgrow Stacker. What you want is for Stacker to still have a strong value prop as the business scales.

+1 for points made regarding ecosystem and CRUD api. Stacker tables vs a self-hosted SQL db seems like comparing apples and pears currently. Stacker tables regularly has me questioning my exclusive use of airtable as backend, but everytime I hit the restrictions of not being able to manipulate the data in the ways I can with airtable (CRUD api, automations, scripting etc).

Like <@U02BB8HKA0Z> says, our small business, and my personal role in the business is probably representative of a portion of your market that exists at the edges of what Stacker is currently catering for - many will be making plans to outgrow Stacker when they reach our position, and largely because we are outgrowing airtable, not Stacker. Hence an opportunity exists for you guys to decouple from airtable, which Stacker tables is not currently achieving in any way.

I'm a burgeoning dev, pawing at all the exciting options for growing our product. 3 years ago I was manually transferring data gathered from Typeform into PDF documents. <@U02BB8HKA0Z>'s introduction of airtable into our business defined an opportunity for centralising and manipulating the data we were gathering. Then Stacker has again redefined an opportunity for us to shape this data into a front end, which in turn we have built a product upon. Stacker and Airtable have been mission critical for us - what started off as a streamlining of process has grown into the development of a tech product.

But as our client list grows, so does the size of the data we are responsible for - <@U02BB8HKA0Z>’s last point  'atm when businesses outgrow Airtable they also outgrow Stacker' is 100% what's happening to us right now. If I had the option to continue to use Stacker as our product scales (i.e. postgres) Stacker would remain relevant to our journey. But currently this is not the case.
