Creating New Records and passing along set information

Is there a way to populate specific fields with preset data when users create a new record?

Example, I'm using the Salesforce integration, When creating a new record (opportunity) we are required to submit Name, Close Date and Stage name. We don't want our users inputting this data or even seeing these field requirements and would actually prefer to have some formula prepopulate them on the back end.

Any idea how to solve this?

A few of us did a deep dive on this a handful of months ago and couldn't figure out how. I believe someone from stacker confirmed it wasn't doable

There’s no way to allow Previewing as a user while not giving edit layout options. The preview as feature was built to support layout editing when applying permissions and filters.

That said, I would love to better understand your use case. Would you be able to give me more details about why the user should be able to preview as different users?

If Preview as is not crucial to you and you want to give them access to all data within the apps, you will need to:
1. Create a role in each app 
2. When setting up the role, check *Can read/modify all data*. This is a master switch that essentially says “Ignore permissions, this role should be able to see, edit, and create everything except editing the app itself”
3. You can then add the user to each app and assign them the new role
You can add them either as a collaborator or as an app user. Adding as a collaborator makes provisioning to multiple apps easier, but adding as an app user lets you link the user to user records, assuming you’re using Airtable.

If you’re on the newest version of Stacker (not customer access), I would recommend adding them as a collaborator if you have several apps, and then adding them as a user too to get the linked record functionality—if the app user email matches the collaborator everything will automatically connect.

I usually either create a dedicated role for this, or I build a new app for internal use.

Let me just say that the entire process and structure of user accounts, permissions and roles still leaves a lot to be desired. The usability aspect of the current arrangement is a constant source of befuddlement even for experienced creators who want to build a more optimal end user experience. I challenge Stacker to host an online web session in order to demonstrate a best practices approach using the current toolkit,  across multiple apps within a given workspace, while being open to engaging in a critical thought process and exchange of ideas on how to improve this from the ground up.

Hi Peter, yes I tend to agree. The difference between Workspace users and 3rd party users (those who sign up, for example) is quite confusing. I understand it now, but took me a long time to get my head around. Still struggle with it sometimes!

When we are dealing with some kind of super complex show/hide/permissions issue we sometimes change the ROLE of the user on the fly.. from stacker

let's say you want your user to go through a bit of training.. after they've signed up. You can set them up to have the role of 'rookie' ... this will only show 1 page.. once they hit that 'i've watched the training video' button .. you can set their role to change to 'trained_user' which will give them access to alot more stuff in the portal..

It’s super difficult to design, especially the navigation menu part which only relies on the role.

Alternatively, using custom CSS can help for that part, but it’s not simple/obvious to do. And permissions get harder to maintain this way.

Ex: if user is beta user, add the css class “is-beta-user” in the page, and rely on this to display/add a few nav items.

I would say it really depends on what the friend is trying to build.

I believe all of the apps have a free trial. I would recommend having a brief play around with all of them to see what _feels_ best, and then ask specific questions about what’s possible and what’s not.

That said, perhaps someone here will have a good comparison model for you. :simple_smile:

Hi Puneeth, I can give my 2 cents on Bubble as I've a lot of experience of it.

• It's a lot more complicated that either Stacker or Softr, I'd estimate it took about 100 hours for me to learn and build my first app with it, although of course your mileage may vary. 
• The plus side is that you can build more complex web apps with advanced workflows. Check out these folks who built <https://www.producthunt.com/products/notrealtwitter|Twitter> with Bubble.
• A big problem with Bubble is the design side of things - you quickly learn that unless you have studied design, you are not a designer. Making websites look good when you start with a blank canvas is really hard. Stacker/Softr provide much of the design (and accessibility) out of the box.

Hi <@U03B50D2JE4>, Oli has given a good analysis of Bubble vs the others. As amazing as Bubble is, you really need to know design and software principles while building on it. Stacker/Softr are more about enabling domain experts to build software so it's faster to pickup.
Within these two, I've found Stacker to have better permission controls, so if you have complicated visibility and roles, Stacker is a good bet. Softr I feel has more flexibility on the UI. Overall, it's best to try out each of them to see which configuration framework speaks to you.

Thanks for the input! Does anyone know what the airtable integrations look like on Softr and Bubble? Stacker's sync with airtable is awesome, wondering how baked in that is with Softr and Bubble.

Softr builds on Airtable, so is very straightforward to sync. For Bubble, I believe you'd have to manually trigger updates to the Airtable with every relevant action, IE

• A user signs up -&gt; Action: Create a new row in Airtable
• A user changes their profile pic -&gt; Action: Update their profile pic
It could be a lot of work - you'd have to make sure every single action that affects the database has "Update Airtable" in the workflow.

Let me just add that I've not played with Airtable / Bubble in over a year, so it may be that there are more streamlined ways of connecting the Bubble database to Airtable now.

There used to be an email issue, where Stacker needed email ID to be lowercase. This can give a similar error. Not sure if that configuration requirement was fixed <@U02N890SW84>

Can you say more about the lowercase issue? We occasionally have a new member who enters their email address to register but never gets the registration email. But when I enter their address for them, they get the email. This has happened a half dozen times. Could it be related?

<@USCPEEY8P> This behaviour only affects recently updated Stacker Classic apps. The external access URL is case-sensitive so entering <mailto:Seb@stackerhq.com|Seb@stackerhq.com> would show as a user that doesn’t exist (cannot be registered), while <mailto:seb@stackerhq.com|seb@stackerhq.com> would work.

Stacker has up to a 15 min data sync cycle. My understanding is that it is a technical limit with the integration with Airtable.

This is one of the reason they have started developing a native table feature.

So if you don’t actually need the data in airtable you could consider putting it in a stacker table. AND if you want it in airtable for longer term reporting purposes you could export it from stacker tables periodically (they have a zapier integration in the works that you could use to create a scheduled zap to extract the data and send it to airtable)

The other alternative that someone in the community came up with (can’t remember who) was to create a refresh button (action button i think) that I think incremented a hidden field on a record. When a record has an update event it writes AND reads back the resulting data from Airtable. In this case the incremented number field. Functionally this makes a single record view refreshable.

<@U03B50D2JE4> Could you show me what you would consider slow data loading speeds? If you could record a video and report it through the support widget, that would help a lot.

<@U02N890SW84> +1 there - our problem is not with the data sync 15 minutes time (_though it still IS an everyday problem we have to “convince” our users to put up with)_ but with a very long loading time for most of our app pages and data - maybe *10-15 seconds per page to fully load the data*.
Any thoughts or tips on how what we could do in our app/base design to reduce data loading time ?

<@U024YE9EQEL> Thanks for the question. Performance improvements are one of our main Q3 objectives, so you could expect at least a somewhat better performance without doing anything after this quarter.

That said, there are a couple of things that make loading slower:
• Very complex permission system (for example, 3+ permissions in a table that apply to the same user)
• A lot of linked record fields showing on the list view, especially if they are multi-record linked fields
• A lot of fields (example, 300+) enabled in a table. A lot of the times we found app builders don’t actually need that many, and disabling them did improve performance

Our app users are in New Zealand. Please setup an Australian based cache so we are not requesting halfway round the world :pray:

The loading times/performance that <@U024YE9EQEL> mentioned is the problem that I meant as well. Will try to take in some of the feedback on making performance better, but please keep us updated on improvements in this!

yeah, that could work if none of your existing tables are suitable for a 'my account' type page

I do have a table with all the info needed but it has it's own page. Can I create 2 pages (as oppose to 2 layouts) from the same table?

Basically linked records aren’t displaying automatically, I thought it was permisisons-based, but they appear after the 5-15 min sync so its a UI thing

Thanks again for flagging <@U01B1LTTYQJ>! Just thought I’d cross-post an update here in case there is anybody else experiencing the issue…

It seems there is a regression from this morning’s release that is causing action steps not to render as expected. In some apps, this is only the case on the initial load, and in others the steps do not load at all. We’ve got a fix ready that is scheduled for release first thing tomorrow morning (UK).

We are really sorry for this issue and appreciate you bringing it our attention!

GA is so complicated to use, such bad UX/DX, grown tired of it. (and it’s illegal to collect EU citizens data now)

Just create a data layer variable that is `user_id` and pass that thruogh to GA

Stacker already pushes that info to the data layer so you’re just piggy backing off that

is Google Tag Manager the only way to view user info? Or is there a way to do it on Google Analytics?
