Guys I feel overwhelmed with the amount of information that I see, wanna read. Uffff... Do you guys deal with that quite often? How do you deal with it? Also I read stuff that helps me achieve my goals at work. But I'm stuck applying the knowledge gained practically. Is there any book that helps achieve this goal? Does the pragmatic thinking book help?

I agree - even in the pragmatic thinking book, it just overloaded me with information, I think its about consistency, just read few pages a day and try to execute whatever the author says, Books are always a theoretical overview no matter how many words of practical they add there. So at the end of the day, consume at a slow pace and execute whatever you learnt.

Information overload is very real. I'm predicting the rise of curators and summarizers to be help navigate all this. Books have a peculiar problem because while there's a market for 300 pages tomes, there is no market for 3 page essays or blog posts. Kindle Single is an interesting change.

Thanks @rough-autumn-89795 , @ancient-area-35708 - when it comes to books that teaches you mental models or helps in structuring your habits these are definitely not page turners. It takes considerable amount of time to read, process and execute in your work. The guilt to not have absorbed the book fully and quickly is something that you have to work on. @acceptable-flag-71699 - got to know that amazon kindle has a summarized version called single. P.S: Just spent 5K on books that was on wishlist for a long time.

Does reading fiction really help in anyway? I understand that its primarily based on personal preference or the phase of life someone is at. But, how much value does a fiction offer? Which genre should be tried as an alternate to fiction, which has some flavour of fiction in it. Not sure if my question make sense. I have primarily read fiction so far. Help me move forward.

Folks, It is great to be here. I got a bunch of nice book names and suggestions based on the discussions in this channel. However, I would like to know more, get more book suggestions from you. I’m avid reader of non-fiction. I like Biographies of founders, startups, tech journeys. I like a bit about learning Indian history too. Ex of book I really enjoyed: Elon Musk, Hit Refresh, Zero to One, The Undoing Project, Atomic Habits, Dr.Kalam’s books. Please give me any suggestions in a thread to this. Appreciate your help 🙂

My goto books of late owing to a lot of stress at work and home have been "Zen Pencils". I cannot stress enough on the importance of that series!

Hi guys, I'm planning to buy a Kindle. I prefer hardcopy but I feel at times especially while traveling I tend to not read because of that and even otherwise, it has reduced. Which Kindle should I go with?

I tried several kindles over the last few years. But couldn’t get myself to like the form factor and e-ink. Settled on to an ipad few years back that only had ebooks and no other apps installed. That setup has worked well thus far

    I've just started reading
    Deep Work
. @tall-advantage-5586: although it's not about meditation specifically, the bulk of the book talks about maintaining focus. Do give it a try.

  • s

    swift-pilot-25722

    12/03/2019, 12:37 PM
Yes, in fact nomadic will help you get the focus by going to remote places. Clearly, if you go to big places, it's tough and defeats the purpose Experienced quite high productive and creative levels in koh lanta / kohub office last month

reading deep work is great, but can you elaborate on what action steps you took post reading in your work schedule? @magnificent-solstice-42554 @gray-bird-14941 I've just read summaries and synopsis and am on 3, 4 strategy as per this summary, want to move to 2, 1 slowly - i.e monastic and bimodal approach https://fourminutebooks.com/deep-work-summary/

I'm still on chapter 4. However the overwhelming recommendation so far has been to eliminate (or tone down) presence on social media to avoid distractions. Which I have somewhat done (I'm not active on facebook, instagram and whatsapp now. Am toning down my reddit usage to a few essential subs. Slack & twitter are the only places where I maintain active involvement).

I’m on rhythmic and journalist approach as well (discussed in deep work). The thing I liked most is to shutdown work and let the conscious brain rest. I find myself thinking about work all the time. Happens a lot in remote setting. Which keeps me in a constant worry/not present in current moment. So I’ve shifted workouts to evening, which for me means shutdown work and I’m not thinking about work after that.

For techies, stop buying technical books, do this instead: 1. Get yourself an ACM subscription at https://india.acm.org 2. The subscription costs you somewhere around 400INR per year. Take a 2 year subscription. 3. Once you’ve got a subscription, you’ll get an email ID as username@acm.org. 4. You can use this to read a lot of ACM papers that are really really brilliant. But, now starts the fun part: The ACM subscription gives you access to the entire O’Reilly digital bookshelf for the period of your subscription. Install the O’Reilly app on your phone / tablet / wherever, login using your ACM email ID from step 3 above and go through the entire gamut of safari and O’Reilly ecosystem. Benefit. Enjoy. If the registration link above is not clearly found, use this - https://services.acm.org/public/qj/proflevel/proflevel_control.cfm?level=3&country=India&form_type=Professional&promo=LEVEL&pay=DD8

I’ve recently been going around asking people what book / resource / person has completely changed their lives. I also tweeted about it. In the process I discovered a book called How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by the creator of Dilbert. The audiobook version of it on Libby is incredible. It goes over: • The concept of optimising one's life around "personal energy" (as opposed to say, money) • Why following one's "passion" is not always a great recipe • Goals vs systems — and optimisers vs simplifiers • ... and much more! Recommended!

    I am currently reading
Talent is Overrated by Geoffrey Colvin
. He started off explaining why the concept of
    Born Genius
is flawed and later introduced a concept called
    Deliberate Practice
. How can we use this concept to achieve exceptional performance.
