not at the point that I wasn't on staff, but yes I had a .staff cloak for a couple years

my IRC logs go back to 2006 and it does show I was on Freenode then

it wasn't super huge, but it was one of the earliest ogg vorbis streams on the internet

and it was all independent music

thing is… as one old enough to remember, I remember gopher going away and I remember UUCP going away. IRC is on that big chopping block, and running away from the meat cleaver every time it tries to come down, so there’s life in it yet, but I wonder for how long.

I must admit that @ work I now use a Matrix client to connect to the internal IRC server, since it's behind the VPN and I don't want to run the VPN on my own client, but do want to be online all the time

I miss readline support in the browser :(

I dropped a shared bouncer on a tools server for internal irc :D

I've noticed I read internal chat a lot less now that it's a browser tab

slack doesn't really add anything core to the experience except for threads and some fluffy client UX

the thing slack and its ilk add is the UX, it was making chat easy for non-techies

yeah. I'm just disappointed that they had to invent their own whole protocol for it

don't get me wrong, I appreciate the fluffy client UX

and to some degree, I don't think IRC would scale to slack sizes without a lot of work
