I think there was a technical reason for toplevel fact hash entries being symbols and not strings?

wasn't there a theoretical performance boost?

symbols are intended to be used in code, sort of like constants

symbols even used to have (in the dark days of Ruby 1.x IIRC) problems with garbage collection and could cause memory leaks

yeah, if you create a symbols in tight loops they'd stay in the global memory space all runtime
