Is anyone using vSphere 7.0 on AMD zen 2 based kit? If so, what CPU/MOBO are you using? I'm thinking of switching over my Skylake-based 3 node cluster to AMD later this year, but don't want to run into any AMD gotchas: NICs that don't work, storage controllers that aren't deteceted, etc

Hey Carl. I recently restarted use of <http://NO-ip.com|NO-ip.com> account for use with nextdns for filtering. It works great, and integrates perfectly with my unifi gateway

I managed to get the UDM Pro on the initial exit from the Early Access, not so lucky this time around.

I really wish they would do a pre-order or similar when going from EA to GA.  I don't even care if I get one of the first units, I just don't want to have to try for the next few months to catch it before it goes out of stock.

I was watching at 3pm, refreshing a lot.... because that's when they had been in stock, thursdays at 3pm 'ish.... then I saw the email from 7pm at around 830p.. missed it again.  maybe next week.. month.. months..

I had it set to give me the in stock notification again, and didn't get the email this time.  I guess all there is to do is to keep waiting and checking.  Maybe I'll manage to get it by the end of the year.

I guess the stars aligned, I totally missed the in stock notification 4 hours ago, but they were still in stock, ordered and confirmation received.

Hooking up this and migrating over to Protect. 

I received my shipping notification today.  Is that the unifi nvr drive?

Let me know how that goes.. I don’t have many cameras so I’ll be relying on my UDM Pro’s built in Protect and hard drive for now. I know you can host other docker containers on the udm pro so long as there are no port conflicts, I wonder if the UNVR is similar.  It would be interesting for something like graffana, secondary Pi-hole with primary  being on the UDM Pro..

Well now, the next problem.. the clarity on the doorbell is much better than the G3 Flex it has me wanting to upgrade cameras.

It only “chimes” once, where it’s a brief chime, instead of a ding on both press and release of the chime, so it’s a bit of a different tone.  What are you seeing?

I got side tracked by a raspberry pi and homebridge this weekend.  Trying to decide if it’s a good thing that I can open my garage with Siri... I do like being able to ask if it is closed.... because I am definitely that guy who will forget and turn around to go check.  The app for the iot garage door was ok.. but shouldn’t check that when I’m driving, this makes that easier

Mine is fine. Just saw others who had issues with not enough power for doorbell and chime. I am surprised they also didn’t release a remote chime.

It doesn't surprise me, they designed around best case with a constant voltage.  Some holder houses don't have sufficient transformer, I believe that's why they also have a wall type plug in the EA store though I'm not sure that's a great idea since it's sort of encouraging people to drill holes to the exterior to plug something in the wall, or to plug something into an existing outlet.  I guess with their family of POE products, I think I'm more surprised that they didn't go either the built in battery route to deal with the lower voltages or the POE route, though I understand for the vast majority of people that would present a barrier to entry.  No easy choices on this one.

Yep was surprised it wasn’t POE or battery. For those not using existing wired hopefully they release a chime.

Also the camera on this makes me want new cameras also. I’m still using G3 cameras lol.

One thing to keep in mind that AMD processors aren't officially supported for netscaler.

I've got a Ryzen chip and you can't license a vpx netscaler on it. It errors. You'll get strange error messages in the UI.

Well, I'm using a ADM Threadripper  2920X with 128GB RAM + 2 NVME 500GB + 2 SSD (dont remember the size lol)  + MOBO AsRock ~Fatal1ty X399 Pro Gaming with built-in NIC 10Gb card + 2x 1Gb. All running vSphere 6.7 CU3 and also nesting other hypervisors.

MUCH better than invest lots of money with professional hardware (real server mobo/cpu) including also a very low energy cost. I'm at Europe where energy is NOT cheap and I left my Lab running 24x7. My wife, brother and I using energy whole month cost less than 100 euros, what could be impossible running 2 or 3  Servers to simulate a cluster.

I also have a Synology NAS DS412+ (2015) doing NFS and iSCSI for simple tests.

I have a Threadripper with 128GB RAM also. I've moved away from disk as my primary bottleneck and now I'm cursing network :slightly_smiling_face:

All my stuffs still 1GB but planning an uplift to 10GB next year ;-)

If you are looking at 10Gb I've found <http://fs.com|fs.com> to be very good at supplying cables and SFP+ modules.  I'm not sure if they are expensive compared to others (no idea whom else supplies this stuff?) but it seems cheap to me.

Indeed, Supermicro has some good options however is more expensive than buy regular hardware, at least in my opinion. Regarding network I just dropped this option, too expensive to play now with 10Gb NICs cables switch etc, and since I have one "big" host I prefer to nest and use one VM with local SSD disks to simulate storage.

On Supermicro can any one share there ideas

10Gb isn’t too expensive.  The highest cost item is the switch, buying used 10Gb NIC’s off eBay is pretty cheap as they are readily available.  Only caveat’s is the VMware HCL if you are going to play with that tech. Mellanox ConnectX-2 can be bought for $25USD but they no longer work with ESXi 7.0 (still work for 6.7 though). ConnectX-3 does work for ESXi 7.0 and they can go for ~$35-$50USD.

Cables from <http://fs.com|fs.com> there can be like ~$10 per cable.

If you want to go as cheap as possible, purchasing used Inifiband stuff is a lot cheaper. You can get like a 24 port switch (each port is *40Gb*!) for like $150-$200USD.

But you have to deal with Infiniband.

Otherwise 10Gb IP switches are quite a bit more expensive.  I have a 16 port-Ubitiquiti switch which cost like $500 to give you an idea.

I have 2 A1SAi-2750F with 32GB RAM, 1TB NVME and 500GB SSD, 2 x E300-8D with 64GB RAM and 1TB NVME and 500 SSD, 1 x HP N54L and 1 x HP Gen8 MicroServer. I have 4 x VMWare 6.7 nodes (the Supermicro kit) and then the N54L is shared storage. All linked up with 2 x Ubiquiti Unifi switches - 48 port and a 24 port. I also have a Skull Canyon NUC with an i7 for a bit of GPU fun. The mains reason for the nodes is so I can run a XenPool or Nutanix Cluster. It can all be rebuilt in a snap.

10 GB wise, if you don't need a ton of ports, i'd look into this little fella from Mikrotik. It's fanless, which is nice, as a lot of 10 Gbe kit have loud-ass fans

I've been using the above unit for about 14 months, i think I rebooted it once throughout that time, and that was only because I was testing something.

For cables, <@UL6KWR1U2> is correct. <http://FS.com|FS.com> is the way to go. I bought all my SFP cables from there.

hardware-wise, AMD Zen 3 is just around the corner!

I use Blue Iris, but I'm toying with the idea of switching to all UBNT cameras/software with the Cloud Key Plus. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations on this?

now.. need to see if we can finagle samba, maybe in a container on that there nvr pro and use the storage on the network too

will these cameras show up in normal unifi controller overview? or do I need another VM for the Unifi Video software? am using xpenology for my 4 cams now and I am checking if I should switch these to unifi products too

unifi video is now end of life, Unifi Protect is the replacement but it only works with Unifi cameras

There’s Protect. That’s where you will manage them and they will show up.

Ubiquiti is moving away from VM's on the Camera side of things and I'm sure they'd like to eventually on the UniFi Network side of things too.  the NVR Pro(shown here), NVR-4, cloudkey+, and Dream Machine Pro all include the Unifi Protect controller (NVR) and various amounts of hdd bays.

Have seen any indication of network side being moved also?

<@UL91DJGSE> If you get the cloud key plus (not the regular cloud key) then it runs the protect software. Think of it as another VM running on the cloud key. Of course you can get the standalone NVRs as well. I've been happy with it so far and just setup my second one for my mom.

My statement was based on the whole UniFi Protect vs UniFi Video.  Though, I think if they try to go down that path they will have a full on revolt from the community. They nearly did so because you can't manage the UDM pro with a UniFi controller that is external to the UDM pro, this is the only sign that I see so far of them going this path.

<@ULN4RGZN3> I rather have everything running as VM's, not as hardware nor Raspberry PI (reason for not going for Pi is that I had to many sd-cards breaking down), that way it'll run in Veeam backup and is synced to my Friends home every day.

Not a large deployment but I have 17 devices on my gen 2 key.

Protect uses most the CPU. This is just the network side.

Why not use the cloud service from ubiquiti? They'll host it for you :-)

Hosted by Ubnt? I saw there are a couple of providers offering it as SaaS. I guess I‘ll go with an on-prem controller, since I managed to spin up an Ubuntu cloud image on my Nutanix AHV cluster. Should be easy enough to scale up if I hit performance limits.

It does seem like they're trying to break into a bit of a weird segment.  Are they trying to get into bigger business?  To you're point it seems like if they were going to focus on their core business, prosumer to small/medium business, they would make more products using 10GbE RJ45 and not SFP+ and QSFP that they've been getting into.  Not that I don't appreciate them coming out with new products, but honestly a lot of them I don't know who they're marketed to...

Or maybe it’s demand for SFP+ and QSFP products they are seeing?

I suppose, now that enterprises are kind of headed the direction of  25Gb or more as a standard 10Gb SFP is much more of a commodity item and definitely more available in the second hand market for reasonable prices. I just hope they don't end up just disappearing products and they maintain support for these for longer periods of time.  All of this isn't to say I don't sometimes have the urge to just build a crazy homelab with the availability of some of these things... That UniFi Switch Aggregation 8 port 10G SFP+ switch has 3 node Nutanix CE all flash cluster written all over it.  Thus far I have avoided this spend.

I have to say i like the cheaper mikrotik 10gb switches and I doubt if ubnt would ever be able to come close to those prices.

When I was looking up that switch at my local store they also had this one advertised, an outdoor switch.

I've got one. The best bit, its PoE powered and VLAN capable. It performs on par with all the other unifi stuff. Its great.
