WTF $4000 for AC. Here I pay max $600 for a Samsung 12k BTU & $100 for installation.

Mine was two larger mini splits. I paid $4k total for both installed. Commercial company waned $10k. AC units get marked up 200% here minimum.

Mine is 63 decibels, which for me is loud in a 200 sq ft office. I should have gone with a 12000 or 15000 btu unit as 10000 is having trouble with 90+ degrees outside and 100+ in the attic

Anyone with a Ubiquiti Amplfi? Do you know whether you can disable DHCP on it? https://www.amplifi.com/explore.html

@Aaron Parker You need to configure AmpliFi in bridge mode, it will disable the DHCP on AmpliFi.

@Aaron Parker To set up bridge mode, perform these steps: Open the AmpliFi app. Select the picture of the AmpliFi router. Tap Internet. Tap Bridge Mode to enable it. Confirm the use of bridge mode. AmpliFi will restart and apply the updated settings.

I bought mine and installed myself (1 minisplit) that was a Pioneer unit. I had to make a deal with my HVAC company to come out and charge/test the unit. I have done a lot of electrical work though. As long as you can handle cutting a hole through the side of your house, you could probably do it. For the HVAC company, you’re not just paying for their time and doing what you can do, they usually warrenty and guarentee their work. Also, you’ll never convince a reputable HVAC company to let you buy on your own and then have them support it. I know it seems like you’re overpaying but hiring people to get up at all hours and fix your unit if something is wrong or replace it is worth something. However, a portable AC unit is a good idea if you have the capacity for it and don’t need a whole mini split. That being said, I love my mini split, it’s great for a large room like my basement.

@User The reason we paid for a friend of a friend install because he charged/tested them also and had the tools for the lines. It's not just cutting a hole & running wires. If you have to do anything with the copper lines and need to do the ends, it's a lot more involved. We did he all the electrical to them ourselves. Also hvac companies mark up big time. My uncles friend who does independent hvac work helped us size & told us where to buy. Only reason he didn't help us install is because he was working a project and couldn't come up from Texas because of his schedule.

Also on the commercial quotes i got from a few different companies, they had maintenance/service contract and install fees on top of the jacked up unit price.

We are saying the same thing. I only got my HVAC company to charge and test because I know them well and give them other business (like a replacement furnace this year). I doubt most people can get that. However, you “could” get a vacuum/charge kit and try it yourself but considering it looked too complex for me (and I’ve done just about everything in terms of DIY) I would never suggest substituting a professional to do this. If there is even the tiniest leak, your refrigerant will leak out and your AC won’t work. Also you need to check building codes. In Georgia, homeowners can do quite a bit, provided you have permits for electrical and AC inspections. Other places won’t let you touch this stuff. However, even with a markup, a mini-split works great!!

Yep we can a do a lot here with building codes. Only thing we couldn't do was panel out for electrical. We did all internal electrical. Also need to look at city laws as well.
