Lumiere: Different defaults for different OS versions is quite common - also there was migration at some point from mlocate to plocate at some point but I expect all the mlocate ones may be EOL by now.

I should, it's in sbin, --debug hasn't really shown me anything

try it with --debug --trace

thankfully these are my test nodes for puppet 6->8
