My impression is that the responsible manager do not have enough knowledge abour vox pupuli and the community and how everything works together

its seems naive for perforce not to have at least planed for the possibility of a fork.

if you know and understand open source, you should plan for a fork when making such a plan

I agree that it’s probably expected / “priced in” -- maybe even desired (Vox would end up handling more of the support for open source variants). It would be a pretty big thing to take on, though. I’m curious if there would really be the appetite (and enough community involvement) to actually make something like that work.

I know the Foreman community needs time to remove Puppet from the critical path so I can probably convince $employer that it's in their best interest to invest engineering effort into it

and legal is probably also happier that than figuring out some EULA

as I mentioned in the call: we do also puppet pos support for customers and are happy to support an open source pipeline and package build environments.

no, Foreman is the upstream to Satellite

though I think OpenStack also uses some Puppet, I haven't looked at OpenStack

at Tor, we are tightly coupled with Puppet, we have a fleet of about a 100 servers we manage that way, with an old, complex codebase

Debian.org is in a similar situation, and lots of other places

we can't lead a fork, but we'll certainly direct all our energies there the second it exists

can we vote on the fork's name already, I call muppet
