    I remember when the options if you didn't want to download the Linux kernel and build it on, say, Minix yourself were Yggdrasil and the Soft Landing System. The first Linux distro I used full time though was RHL 5.0 or so, and we configured and built that 2.0.x kernel for every hardware model we used.

    In 1998, I ran a linux user group and I remember (vaguely) a local expo of some sort where we had a table and we demoed VMware when they were still a scrappy little startup that nobody had ever heard of, building a thing that no home users understood.
