But I personally tend to lean more towards running such things myself, since I've been struct quite badly by the sysadmin disease

Well, starting with a zero-budget solution - just setting up some rooms using existing Matrix servers and linking them with the existing matrix.org slack bridge - is probably a good way to start nonetheless
