You def need a base coat and/or zenithal under that contrast coat to start having great results i understood

So this is how the wargs from JiME look from me. Mostly table-top ready, so really only base coat, dry brush and a bit of highlighting. If contrast paints make it not that much easier I think I will first stick with my normal painting for the heroes and might just try contrast paints with 3 or 4 colours for the brood mother and rats.

Those are good ! Especially the bases ! Contrast works on the fur, but a base is still better for control

Heros will allow for contrast on the items like boots and inner jackets. Base for outer wear so so can layer the highlights is a must.

Rule of thumb: Lots of textures = OK for contrast paint

Shouldn't it be called "rule of dumb" 😅

If people want to compare, there are wargs with a single coat of contrast paint which only took a few minutes each.

(Of course, wargs are easier than most figures.)

(And the bases are Army Painter matte black, not contrast. Contrast paints would look bad on bases.)

Looks good for a quick paint of the main threat's adds. Did you prime or go straight on the plastic ?

Primed with Citadel Corax White spray primer. Their suggested primer is Wraith Bone but I couldn't get any at the time.

After using Wraith Bone now I DO like it better than the white, but not so much I wouldn't use white again if it was all I had handy.

I paint a lot without primer - straight on the plastic. It works, but it is delicate

I really dont think its recommended to do that other than for a show piece

I used black contrast paint for base layer on the Menhirs from Tainted Grail. Didn't get at all the effect I was hoping for. A lot of the paint just flowed straight down the sides. Maybe I used too much or maybe it was the angular shape of the minis.

For priming I like to use zenithal highlighting. I either brush on gray primer or spray on black. Then spray white primer from above.

@Boboddy I agree, it's a difficulty technique to make work with little benefit beyond a super smooth surface for blending.

Attention! Experienced airbrush painters.. i have an iwata smartjet with 1/8" hose. I have two iwata airbrushes and both have fit perfectly with the hose. I recently got an infinity crplus and the hose fitting will not properly connect. Itll tightly one turn and then just get stuck. I switched to a backup hose and it connects to all 3 airbrushes without issue (its a 1/8" too). So the question is, has anyone else experienced discrepancies with fittings and airbrushes? I figured they would all be standardized but this doesnt seem the case..

I know you need an adapter to use the h&s airbrushes on the iwata hoses

Yes, using a badger. There's adapters

This is a really clever approach to metal, so much depth of colour.

It impressed me, how little, actual metal color needed to make it a good steal/iron amor

As a fan of NMM, and looking at Trent's videos, I feel this is pretty interesting to listen:
