so if i made journal.2021.09.29.hello.md and in the journal.yml file added output: just beneath root or something to myvault/journal it should store them there

Tree view takes care of that. I didn't know that existed, along with a calendar?

a lot of this is on us - we need to make existing features easier to discover

Being curious: what areas of usability did you focus on? I feel it's mostly publisbing related but probably I'm missing something

opps, did i say september? i mean October, we will be dedicating all of october to this 😅 two primary things we're focusing on -> making existing features easier to use (eg. reduce steps in publishing, make schemas easier to apply, etc) and making it easier for new users to start using dendron (eg. remove requirement for workspaces, add simple import options, etc)

"making it easier for new users to start using dendron" = streamline the documents and make more zero to hero tutorials 😉 at the moment it is scary to suggest dendron to student and colleagues, this will lead to a stream of questions

we made a dedicated hire to help streamline the documentation and create awesome tutorials. he hasn't formally started yet but you can say hi to @User next time he's online 🙂

Good afternoon all. New user. The promise of Dendron seems awesome. The reality is . . . I can't actually get it installed in order to use it. Your docs and website and general outreach or admirable and impressive, but unfortunately for me, not enough to get it up and running. I've been able to work through the tutorial, but after that, I'm lost.

Some feedback . . . even for those vaguely familiar with with VS Code, terms like vault and workspace leave me gasping for air. I think I understand it, but it feels like I'm lacking basic referents. Also . . . I keep running into errors about multiple vaults. I have not created multiple vaults on purpose, but it's a dead end. It is not telling me what vaults it thinks are multiples, or where they are. Is there a list in Dendron that tells me what the vaults are and where they are? Can I just delete a vault from the file system, or is there a pointer in Dendron that also needs to be deleted?

When I go to Dendron Configuration it just sits there and says "Still starting up". Clearly an indication something is wrong . . . but what?

I've uninstalled VSCode and Dendron twice trying to get back to a clean installation, but when I re-install pointers seem to still be there to dead installs?

As an example of not having enough referents . . . one of the fixes I found is "run Dendron inside a workspace". Unfortunately, I don't know what that means.

Thanks for the feedback! We hear it and this is also why we're spending the month of October on simplifying the experience. Your points are all valid and sorry you went through the hassle. Happy to walk you through starting from from a clean environment myself if you're interested in a one on one onboarding: https://calendly.com/d/mqtk-rf7q/onboard

So . . . I'll bang on it a bit more . . . but at some point I have to give up and move on . . . after all, I'm actually trying to record notes for something.

Workspace is a Vscode concept to collect several folders at a time. Dendron uses it for some basic configuration. A vault is a Dendron concept and basically a collection of your notes. You can have multiple vaults in Dendron and they would reside in a single workspace but I'd recommend sticking to a single vault for the beginning. If you delete a vault from the file system you should also delete the entries in the two configuration files
    dendron.code-workspace
    and
    dendron.yml
. You can also start over and create a new workspace and vault by running the command
    Dendron: Initialize workspace
. If you do this you can copy existing notes into the new location. After that run
    Dendron: Doctor
    with the option
    fixFrontMatter
    and
    Dendron: Reload Index
    .

Those are all good pointers. I do actually seem to be making some progress. Of course, most of my issues are self-induced.

Almost all of my issues and mistakes are self-induced 🙃 and starting with a new tool gives you even more opportunity for mistakes. Don't hesitate to ask happy to help if I can. Maybe take the chance to get an intro by @kevins8. What could be cooler than an intro by the inventor himself?
