@User did you also test IGEL UDC on the NUCs? How much is the Stratodesk license?

Without keyboad/monitor/mouse looking at around $360 per NUC plus license or $100 per RPI3 including the Stratodesk license. You can get separate licenses for around $39 apiece.

@dready -- Looked at Igel but starting price w/o license for the UD2 (low-end model) is around $350 so already at the high end of what anyone is willing to pay for. Have also been burned too many times by proprietary software/firmware and thus we are mostly interested in generic systems can can be readily repurposed for practically anything.

Also, we are interested in a management system that can handle multiple models of things. Long-term, I hope the Pi option works out as it would be at least half as costly.

udc is the software only option, worth to have a look imho. their free management console is the best i know

But the ViewSonic bundle supported by Citrix for integration with the RPI uses Stratodesk. It's not a beautiful interface, but it's functional. The management console with Stratodesk is also free, you just have to license individual clients. We definitely need something that can support the RPI option.

Even the NUC may end up being too costly. We're just doing a PoC, and the financial decision on what will be picked lies outside of my hands.

maybe we should bring this up to doug brown and ping him. i think IGEL might be interested in having a solution for rpi based hardware, since they call themselves a software focused company and they are looking into IoT too as far as I know.

@dready on a recent webinar that Igel did with Doug Brown he mentioned RPi support is coming soon

Soon is relative and not helpful if the need is "now" (meaning as in a few weeks). 😐 And that means having everything tested and a report submitted.

I can certainly contact Doug. In fact, I just emailed him.

Will be interesting how they do it as the IGEL OS requires 2GB memory but the RPi3 only comes with 1GB. The UD Pocket can work on devices work on devices with 1GB but you’d have to somehow change the boot order on the RPi3 to boot from the UD Pocket.

Wonder if you could put the UD Pocket OS directly on media in the RPi instead of usb?

Maybe, Jarian, but for labs you'd have to find also some way to secure it (Superglue?!). BTW, have not heard back from Doug yet.

Or a case that doesn't allow the SD card to be removed

The Pi3 case that comes from Viewsonic has to be pulled apart to access the SD card and can be secured with a Kensington lock.

Just heard back from Doug. He said Igel currently has no intentions to support teh RPI or NUC, that there is not large enough a market to justify it.

We will push ahead with Stratodesk, as other than ThinLinx there are really no other viable alternatives at present, and see how it goes.

Initially, the library is looking at around 60 to 100 units, probably not all this budget year (July 1 - June 30). Longer-term, we are looking at replacing an additional 300 to 400. The current model most in use on campus is the Dell/Wyse Xenith 2 with a few model 3 units as well as a few older "plain" Xenith. They are now known as the 3000 series, I believe, like the 3020. There is still some debate whether or not to just go with cheap PCs, instead. There is a whole lot up in the air here right now, frankly.
