No, I was right. RHEL 6 is not supported as a Puppet server:

I'm trying to 'preseed' the /opt/puppetlabs/puppet/cache/lib/puppet stuff for some automation I'm doing. "puppet agent -t --noop" will load all of the ruby stuff but then it takes about a minute to finish 'noop'ing before I can run puppet again. Is there any way to get all of the ruby stuff without running all of the manifests? I don't see anything on "puppet agent --help" that indicates to pull down ruby only stuff. I'm building and destroying servers like crazy and I'd like for that part of the automation to be complete before I run "puppet agent -t" on the command line to save me time.

Hello, everyone. Are there any blogs you all recommend reading/following for the latest puppet news/tricks/etc? Thank you.

there’s a to of blogs out there… thing is, there hasn’t been a lot of earth-shattering changes of late, just maintenance releases, and a lot of “continuance” sort of work.

Hey @runlolarun • I think the most active blog platform has been the Puppet + Community led https://dev.to/t/puppet • The official https://www.puppet.com/blog • And https://www.puppet.com/docs/patterns-and-tactics/latest/patterns-and-tactics.html which focuses on advanced configuration and workflows mostly for Puppet Enterprise.

i think i'm misunderstanding something. I have a file on my compilers that I would like my agents to pull down. Very, very small.

file() seems to only want to send the file to the modules directory, instead of to a specific folder am I correct?

does anyone have a pattern for generating time based tokens in hashicorp’s vault for autosigning purposes? i’m looking to set up the autosign gem/module for this but feel like i’m missing something with the token transfer to the master. seems like it should be possible to use vault for this instead and not have to ship tokens around, but maybe i’m wrong. any tips or patterns out there?

Looking for clarification: Is the class::params technique now deprecated in favor of the hiera.yml ./data/common.yaml technique? I'm writing a new class module and want to make sure I'm using the best practices for parameters.

https://github.com/voxpupuli/puppet-dbbackup/blob/master/manifests/init.pp#L19-L27 like this. data directly in the init.pp. init.pp doesn't inherit any other class, the params have datatypes and above some docs: https://github.com/voxpupuli/puppet-dbbackup/blob/master/manifests/init.pp#L1-L18

on a puppet server (the one thats serving the host, as I’ve disabled the other puppetserver to allow me to ‘fiddle’ with the code / hieradata) puppet lookup --node<fqdn> --environment=<puppet-env> --facts /tmp/facts.yaml grafana::manage_package_repo The /tmp/facts.yaml just sets the role for the host. I’ve tried setting the hieradata in host/<fqdn>.yaml, role/<role-name>.yaml and in grafana/data/common.yaml - in each case the lookup returns false (and with --explain reports the file I’d expect it to find the key within)
