Hey guys... I have to reinstall an OS where puppet server is running as it's going EOL. What is the best way to migrate puppet server to a new server. Should I start from scratch and move clients over or should I rsync over the installation and just switch hostnames? If I put up a new server, will I need to resign all clients or will it work without if I use the same root ca? I have some resources tied to puppetdb, what is the best way to migrate that? Setup replication and then switch over the db to a new server once they are in sync?

@brokencode I usually decide based on how many nodes I have to switch over

we are in the 500 nodes number...

if I setup a new server with CA signed by the same root CA and update server name on the clients, will they just work? Or do I need to resign nodes?

I’m thinking likely do an autosign, wait for all the nodes to check in and sign, and then turn it off (if you want)

I think the only issue I have right now is puppetdb... It's a source for our monitoring system and if I move nodes over, servers will drop out of monitoring (monitoring server is using a remote resource to generate required YAML files). I guess the best option would be to use the same puppetdb for both servers and then move over the DB as a last step?

I’d go with containers and separate CA from compilers (make it separate container). This way it’d be much easier to reshuffle services across servers later.

Will look into it. We don't use much containers as we dont have a good usecase and it makes stuff more complicated for us. But doesnt hurt to check

I know it comes as a shock to some, but there’s tons of us out here that don’t even look at containers, much less use them.

I look at them long enough to pass the next RedHat exam, then I completely forget about them until next time.

I was trying to avoid containers for years.. but then I found them hugely useful at some point of time.. cannot think of infra w/o containers these days anymore.. (containers != k8s just in case)

Hello everyone, I want to install puppet 7 on centos 6, but when I run the command 'yum install puppet' it will look for the centos 7 repository and it gives me an error with systemd. Before running that command download this repository 'rpm -ivh https://yum.puppetlabs.com/puppet7/puppet7-release-el-6.noarch.rpm', can someone help me please.

You don’t want the vendored Puppet.

Being that ANY RedHat variant of version 6 is long since EoL, you’re going to have a bad time.
