this guy is a fucking clown
  • g
This is still a public board, so no matter how others are behaving, let's keep htmx classy 🙂

i didn't say anything objectionable i said his argument was a straw man and he should do better.
  • g
he's just a fucking pretentious douche
  • g
god i hate that these idiots get so much 'clout' in this industry by doing more and more complex garbage

Rich is a pretty talented technologist. He's caught lightning in a bottle with Svelte, and for a certain class of problems and programmers solving those problems, he's right. But there are no silver bullets, and we don't all have to drink his KoolAid, nor anyone else our own.
  • g
Rich is high on the smell of his own shit right now, and clearly lacks any perspective that's not his own.
  • g
His holier than thou attitude is a massive blinking neon sign of an inferiority complex.
  • g
Yeah.. that's the problem with communicating over text (IM, Email, Twitter). It makes everyone seem more aggressive than they mean to be. It's easy to take things out of context, and next thing you know, everyone is mad at everyone else. I can accept that the creator of a big front-end framework would be "all in" on Javascript. But @MSM is right - there are no silver bullets, and different organizations have different needs. I'm just happy to not be a part of an organization that needs Angular/React/Svelte
  • g
Sorry you're upset about Twitter, but let's keep some perspective 🙂 https://xkcd.com/386/

a couple friends of mine want to start our own thing, but we're currently trying to find an idea that we can get behind to build. and there'll be a strict "no javascript" rule for our company lol
  • g
    yeah i hear that.
  • g
it's just frustrating because my job, all the jobs i've had in the last 8 years, are just corrupted, twisted, toxic versions of what the job could be.
  • g
I will say this: I'm old enough to remember when the relational DB people were horrified -- SIMPLY HORRIFIED -- that someone would call Mongo DB a database.
  • g
and these 'technologists' out there are actively making all of our day to day lives so much worse
  • g
    there's no responsibility anymore.
  • g
they don't actually reflect on what they create; they create complexity for the sake of complexity
  • g
Technological progress moves like scientific progress -- one gravestone at a time.
  • g
i guess it does drive up developer salary, so maybe i should be thankful.
  • j
I kinda doubt Rich Harris is out to get you. 🙂
  • g
People get used to what they're used to, and then they cling to it when the world changes around them. Maybe this "HTML fragments" approach is that change that the Internet needs. Time will tell.
  • g
Not personally, no. But there's a fair bit of "cargo cult" in the tech community. There's nothing new about that.
  • j
I was glad someone pointed out Fly.io in the side discussion about edge computing. Just because all the FaaS providers start with Node as the underlying engine doesn't mean that's where it begins and ends.
  • j
Nope. The Rails guys do it. The Pythonistas do it. God help you if you run afoul of the Haskell guys.
  • g
Javascript is the most criminal offender of it though.
  • g
The entire front-end development industry, top to bottom, globally, is based on cargo cult.
