it's so frustrating that the industry is led by people like this who are close enough to, but not quite having competence that they are very dangerous with the power they wield.

I have to say I get a bit frustrated with the constant what-about-accessability retorts I get from JS folks, as if the JS world isn't replete with the same issues. htmx is pragmatic on the topic and allows users to build software that is extremely accessible (e.g. use only hx-boost) or that requires some additional work (e.g. active search) or wherever else they want to set the knob.

It depends on what you are building.. I work on enterprise software and no one cares. But if you are building twitter yeah it matters
  • m
But often in these discussions, accessibility comes up and it just becomes a conceptual club to beat other people down with. Nothing except a purely vanilla HTML implementation will satisfy them for other libraries
  • m
absolutely, although twitter without js? Good luck.
  • g
    why
  • g
Yeah, I don't get it. I'm certainly NOT an accessibility guru, but I don't understand how a pile of JS-rendered HTML is any more or less accessible than a pile of server-rendered HTML.
  • g
why can't you build twitter without a javascript framework
  • g
It seems like a cop-out. But then again, I'm not really up on accessibility.
  • m
    oh, you could, for sure
  • g
    of course you could
  • g
and it would be better lol
  • m
    lol
  • m
    it might just be!
  • g
have you seen the elixir liveview twitter clone demo
  • g
    it's the same principle, html-over-the-wire
  • g
and it's a better version of twitter written in 15 minutes.
  • m
    🙂
  • g
our industry is so fucked by javascript.
  • m
and yet, without javascript, how could we defeat javascript?
  • g
    > The current gen of frameworks have definitely become to heavy, but I would not go back to schlepping HTML over the wire for every action. There are often state management issues and the experience can become laggy over a slow network.
  • g
    can you believe this shitpost
  • g
it's hard for me to believe people actually type this out in good faith
  • m
they just don't know or understand yet
  • g
like maybe i think people are generally smarter than they are
  • g
but you have to try really hard to come up with an "argument" this stupid
  • m
every shit-poster is just an effort-poster you haven't met yet

the svelte dev community is in that cult phase. Rich going to work for Vercel appears to have given that mindset a boost. i've walked away from both of those recently.
