better get working on that pluralisation support

There's the normal, standard Indo-European system with a singular word and then a plural formed by changing the singular
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:08 PM
Then another system called collective-singulative, where the plural form is the base and the singular is derived from it
  • c

    02/10/2023, 2:08 PM
Collectives have a, well, collective meaning
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:09 PM
So for example the word 'coeden' means tree, but 'coed' means something like 'forest'
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:09 PM
It's also often used for animals
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:09 PM
thats not a plural though, is it?
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:09 PM
Adar is a flock of birds, and aderyn is one single bird

    tree, trees, forest, forests
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:10 PM
No, it's specifically not a plural

kind of nice way of thinking - it's like group's individual

like forest member is a tree ?
  • c

    Yeah

Ian it comes across to me as a collective plural than a regular plural
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:11 PM
    yeah
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:12 PM
ok, so would you say: There are many forests here, each forest contains many trees, trees are nice
  • i

    icy-zebra-52882

    02/10/2023, 2:12 PM
like a flock of birds, but you can still say bird or birds
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:12 PM
i think "flock" is a collective noun isnt it?
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:13 PM
like "gaggle of geese", "shoal of fish", "pride of lions"
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:13 PM
or better: There are many forests here, each forest contains many trees, a tree is green
  • c

    02/10/2023, 2:14 PM
Mae llawer o goedwigoedd yma; mae pob un yn cynnwys llawer o goed; mae coeden yn werdd

  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:15 PM
Coedwig is the word for forest
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:15 PM
    Plural coedwigoedd
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:16 PM
jesus, so it changed to "goedwigoedd" because... ... reasons.
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:16 PM
Coed is the word for trees, but it carries a collective meaning so this feels like a translation rather than something composed in welsh
  • b

    bright-gpu-74537

    02/10/2023, 2:16 PM
so how do you say "tree" then?
  • c

    clever-yak-82528

    02/10/2023, 2:16 PM
    Coeden
  • b
