IDK if Apple would add motion detection like that

Also, a USB-C to USB-C is always there for the iPad so it's not that much of a pain. Surely lasts less than Apple's, but I come from the old Magic Keyboard with the AA batteries so it's a big jump up ahah

also are you using the dongle? Their custom RF protocol might be a lot more efficient at allowing sparse communication without a constant connection

oh without a doubt, I remember changing those so often lol

Not really, it's only USB-A for some weird reason. They send you a USB-C to USB-C cable for charging, a model is even Mac specific and the dongle is either USB-A or non-existent.

eventually I did a bunch of testing and determined that the battery brand that lasts the longest and gives the clearest power out of everything commonly available in the US is IKEA 🤣

Oh, wow. I had a rechargeable battery for the two Magic peripherals, I then switched to the MX series.

You can convert the dongle, apparently:

rechargeable AA doesn't last nearly long enough because NiMH is trash, but Li-ion or LiPo batteries are delightful (but you can't make them AA bc voltage diff)

    ah makes sense

Yeah, but the cost of changing them was becoming so high and I didn't want to throw all those batteries away.

I think the inordinately-expensive-but-super-cool dream for me would be a table where the entire surface is a mesh of inductive chargers, so I could just put my laptop/phone/keyboard/touchpad/mouse/monitors on the desk and have them all be powered, with maybe a cable or two for the actual video data to my monitors

    Yes.

Also perhaps localized cooling loops and switches so it could actively heatsink the higher powered devices

I have a USB-C cable to my MacBook, but Thunderbolt monitors are still way more expensive for actual good PD power. Some vary even the charging capacity depending on the display brightness. If only I had a M1 MacBook with basically 0 power consumption ahah

so I have 2x Dell U2720Q - they can usually fully charge up my dell mobile workstation laptop (NVidia dGPU always on, cpu usually in use, decent room heater tbh) or my personal macbook pro (16 inch everything maxed out, also an excellent space heater)

each monitor is USB-C 4k x 10bit color and they were like $600

They are 1200$ here in Italy and they are not even available ahah

Next upgrade. I have a 32" 4k panel from Lenovo. I wouldn't even have the space for two.

are electronics usually a lot pricier in Italy?
  • i

    itsmatteomanf

    12/08/2020, 9:12 PM
Only some. Screens are and most electronics is more expensive in general in Europe. Apple is normally not that much, for some weird reason ahah

TVs it varies by brand. Most vary though Dell is pretty expensive, Lenovo less, for example.
  • h

    12/08/2020, 9:12 PM
ahhhhh is this because of that whole screen tax thing in the EU to pay for public broadcasting?

I imagine Apple doing things like classifying their displays as "thunderbolt/usb/ethernet hub w/ attached display" if so hahaha
  • i

    itsmatteomanf

    12/08/2020, 9:14 PM
Not a thing (at least in Italy and the UK as far as I know) ahah we have a tax for the possession of a TV to pay for the public broadcasting, but it's per household and it's like 120$/year split monthly in the power bill (you can not pay it if you don't have any TV receiving equipment and use only the internet).

In Italy there is a ridiculous tax introduced thanks to lobbying by that "public" agency a few years back to pay for copyrighted works of art downloaded illegally on disk space.

Everyone hates it, the artists take little to nothing and the agency keeps everything basically.
