we run an ad serving network, so expose a js snippet to hundreds of shopify stores. guessing caching that js script (albeit R2 backed) is breaking tos?

i don't have the money to pay for one, to be honest. $25 a month serves us well

I can only speculate - how much other traffic do you serve? what's your total bandwidth/req usage?

just mega scared to use cloudflare now, need some reassurance 😩

    1k a month. probably 20reqs/hr

    bandwidth?
  • m

    04/05/2023, 9:40 PM
14MB it says in the dashboard

    James

    04/05/2023, 9:40 PM
    yeah okay, I wouldn't worry

but, that is today. business only started now. scale is imminent

so more concerned about 6months from now and 100req/s

until we're talking tens of TBs or more, this is almost certainly unlikely to ever be a problem
  • j

    James

    04/05/2023, 9:41 PM
and at that point, you can probably consider an ENT contract and account team 🙂

    04/05/2023, 9:41 PM
so use cf but at some point you need to pay for the privilege of using cf?

meaning cloudflare isn't trustworthy platform unless enterprise?
  • j

    James

    04/05/2023, 9:43 PM
I'm not really sure I follow. At a point that you hit the scale that you're serving tens of TBs or more, you'll probably want to consider upgrading your plan, and then eventually reach ENT. Like you would with any usage-based service 🤔

take rsms for example, he legit built the font cloudflare use. offer it for free to millions of people. he cannot afford the privilege of enterprise, and y'all yeeted his traffic.

didn't know i would do that, but thank you. do you have resources to learn about what i should do at various moments of growth. like didn't know that scale meant upgrading a plan.

    got it! 💕

I agree this situation was unfortunate. The biggest issue here imo was the lack of reporting in the dash, and the alert just being an email - that sucks. Bad automated detections for this kinda thing are something that's affected cf for a while across various products, and I know it's something very much top of mind internally right now to improve
  • m

    marais

    04/05/2023, 9:46 PM
that's more side effect, even if it was alerted to him, what's he to do with the information? tell his free users to stop using his free font?

    04/05/2023, 9:46 PM
I think it's a pretty common thing with any saas that as you grow, so will your bill. But cf can definitely do a LOT to improve reporting and reassurance around this. People should not be scared to grow with cf, and it really sucks that that's a growing sentiment 😦

    04/05/2023, 9:47 PM
i get it, cf is a business to make money. so at some point someone needs to subsidise the $25 low price
  • j

    James

    04/05/2023, 9:47 PM
I think if the alert was more pro-active and not "sorry, it's yeeted", a much more open and productive convo could be had about costs, scaling, etc. But yep, it completely sucks that things just get yeeted and all you get is a "sorry, it happened" email, and no time to prepare

    04/05/2023, 9:48 PM
yeah it's sad. and a shame. and scary.

    James

    04/05/2023, 9:49 PM
it's a massive area of improvement that cf need to invest a lot of time and devrel into, imo. You're totally right - people are scared, concerned, and worried about building and growing with cf right now.

so in summary; - cf sucks with warnings - don't use static assets unless it's origin is r2 - use waf to drop requests not from your domain - hope and pray i can grow with cf

anecdotally, I know way more people that haven't ever had issues than those that have. I know that's a completely bs statement, but I don't have a whole lot else to reassure you right now unfortunately 😦 Realistically with your current usage, I wouldn't be worried for a long time, like 1000+ times your current usage
