Yeah, that's what it sounds like in the rulebook.... just felt unintuitive at first to "hit" without needing to roll.

Think of it like Your trained and really good at what you do So you always just hit things The dice are you putting might behing it, making it stronger due to armor or whatever your trying to hit has Trying to hit it harder is what makes you miss

Regarding the losses part of the end of an encounter, and losing and item used, what counts as 'used'? Do you have to activate an item or just bring it with you?
  • d

Ie if you bring items but never actually activate them, do you still lose something?

Or if you only activate 1 item, do you have to lose that item, or any of them?

My understand was "used" means items you brought with you, even if you didn't activate them. If you own a bow, longsword, and cloak... you can only take the longsword or bow. But even if you never activate the longsword's ability, you are still "using" it to hit the enemies. And any armor you have is still being used to help protect you from damage.

I thought it meant the item was battleflowed in, contrary to what @huperniKao is stating

the issue being the Tally rules say "used" & the Item rules say "played"

If you look at E16, first paragraph states "any number of item cards can be used during a turn" so that reads to me like "used = played"

So if I never battleflow an item, I don't have anything used, so don't have to lose anything?
  • m

    that was my understanding

That is the root of my question. We have played that way, specifically it's the companion mode oathsworn in our 3 player group this comes up most often. But thought we might have gotten this wrong.

maybe @Shadowborne Games can clarify. The way I'm reading it makes it better to only use an item with a throwaway item so you can keep the one that's actually good. The way huper is reading it means I may as well yolo all my stuff but every chapter i'm going to need a banksmith visit if I don't get some decent draws

the item usage is a point of contention with my group. none of us like the implementation very well as there's some items you just wanna always use but can't or you'll risk losing it

Pretty sure “used” in this context means brought into the encounter, whether you activated any of its abilities or not.

Well, you use a weapon when making attacks regardless of whether you play its card for its active ability. If you want to play this flavorfully, you’d need to track whether you make any non-unarmed attacks (for weapons) or ever get attacked (for armor). I’d strongly guess that the intent was to skip all that tracking and just assume you meaningfully use each item every fight, so they’re all eligible for breaking.

Arluza says it's equipped so it must be that. I would never doubt him or his irrational anger

@Michaels The items that are lost must have been equipped.

Do the damage locations feel right/left opposite to anyone else? It seems like the dice are set up so damaging the right flank of a figure removes the right die, but I always want to remove the left die like the damage is a grid with the monster facing me. I’m not sure that my explanation makes sense though 😅.

Q: cone attacks work like AOE for targeting only a single die on a large enemy, adding one damage for each area hit?

The free company sheet says field medic pays 3 iron, but the rulebook says you add 2 hourglasses to the time track. Which is correct?

Yup! Cone attacks are AoE attacks!

Free company sheet is correct. You can remember it by noting that components always override rules.
