One question when breaking a location, the rule book says to first check whether a new stage is triggered. If that is the case, will the reaction be the let's say stage I card that was already face up (and for which I could prepare) or will it be the first stage 2 card leading to a surprise?

Sounds like that player needs to be left in the deepwood for doubting and causing unrest! Get in line or get left in the woods.

How does knockback work against large enemies in this situation? Add the priest, I targeted the eastern adjacent hex (back right flank) Do I: 1. knockback that hex directly away from me, knocking her directly south into the rat 2. Knockback the whole boss away from me, in which case NW rule would send her SW and miss the rat?

The picture is a bit blurry, so I cannot say for sure. But knock back goes straight back. So in this situation, I believe she would slide straight back from the priest and miss the rat.

I would've guessed that, if a player inflicts knockback and there's two directions to knock the monster directly away from the player, it's player's choice. But I'm not sure about that. Edit: Huh, yeah, it's still North then West when applied by player characters.

Would rule of North then West apply if two valid directions exist?

Keep in mind, it's a PVE game. Ultimately, the ruling is whatever you and your group decide. Just try to remain as fair as you wish to be. For instance, the above is pretty easy. Just knock it backwards. Don't let minutae deter progress.

No, the Grove Maiden is the only character unlocked during play (and can technically be played before the unlock, but she's more complex so this is not recommend by the developers)

Looking for some clarification on item cards that don’t have a cooldown number (I.e. the tattered flax garments) do those play from the hand or do they just stay out as the have no ability and cool down?

That is not correct. We just looked that up, it's on page 29 of the encounter rulebook.
