I used a brown primer for the trees mainly out of laziness. Same with allies. gun metal primer

Wet blending and/or feathering edges are your friends.

I’m so novice, I’ve yet to meet them

Wet blending isn't too hard. You have your two paints ready to go. Put your shadow tone down (like in the creases of a cloak) then quickly rinse your brush and go to your mid tone. Put that on and work it into the edge of the still wet shadow tone. The two wet paints mix along the edge and create a smoother transition blend.

If I'm not working fast enough to wet blend or if a highlight is more stark than I like I'll feather the edge. You put your paint down then rinse your brush and make sure it's just a bit damp (I put it in my mouth real quick but you can dab it on a paper towel) and run it back and forth along the still wet edge to pull the paint out and thin it so it softens the transition.

This particular mini was blended in layers w a brush. But others I have done use an airbrush. I actually like to rough in shadows, highlights and mids and go in w an airbrush with about an 8 to 1 or even 10 to 1 ratio of thinner to paint. Then w very low pressure spray to blend. It’s not a super forgiving technique though. The liquid is so thin that you can potentially blast what looks like water everywhere. This technique is used by Sergio Calvo. Who I have done tutorials and gotten feedback from in the past. Go check out his youtube vids on airbrush use. Pretty great .

man, i'd love to be able to airbrush, but the problem is that my painting station is firmly in the basement, and i don't think it's possible to have proper ventilation in the basement for an airbrush 😦

My understanding is that ventilation isn't a huge issue as long as you're not: a) using the airbrush to varnish (always wear a mask regardless of ventilation with this) b) using it on a whole Warhammer army at once C) a professional that's using it all day That's all from my research and not experience though. I just got my airbrush and am using Oathsworn to learn it.

Airbrushing is a lot of fun, but probably a little more challenging than you expect it to be. Rarely is it a big time saver for smaller stuff. I love it and wholeheartedly recommend it, but be aware there can be a lot of troubleshooting early on!

i don't mind figuring things out as i go along. I think in the long run it'll save me time just from priming alone. Not to mention $$ with what i spend on cans of primer at $15 bucks a pop.

however, i can see proper care and cleaning taking up quite a bit of time as well i guess

Actually I still prime black using a spraycan. I'll somtimes come in with a white primer over that using the airbrush. Either way, I am sure you'll have a blast using it!

I did not think ventilation is big thing either, as its just spraying acrylic paint with compressed air... It shouldn't be much more to air than with brush? But maybe I am entirely wrong. My reasons of not doing it is: - Space: Would need place for air canisters and needle and hoses it comes with, plus whatever motor it needs. - Maintenance: I am not sure if I am that keen on cleaning the needle, seems more hassle compared to cleaning brushes. - While not super dangerous, I do not know if I need compressed air canister in the house.

My only temptation would be like getting the basecoats with airbrush and then doing maybe some shadowing with it... but eh, not feeling I am there due to above reasons.

Yes needs more space. The real issue is reassemble the pistol after cleaning 😅 The the air is not held in a canister, and relived when turn off the compressor.

Ah, I learn new things. So its just compressor then, dunno why I thought they had cannister.

I'm planning to build a workstation with a vent leading to a shop vac. Should work.
