Same with rocks. Paint the rocks a darker gray or brownish grey then dry brush them with a lighter gray. Boom! Beautifully highlighted rocks.

I could share the colors I used but they're subjective and mostly what I had on hand. The most important tips there are 1) watch the exploring colors videos by Vince Venturella to figure out how to properly lighten or darken colors. 2) get Vallejo Ice Yellow 3) get Vallejo Verdigris. These two colors will let you lighten most anything to a highlight without doing things like turning reds pink or purples into some pastel violet that doesn't highlight well.

You'll want a smaller brush for drybrushing smaller details, though. Use an old brush, and cut the tip off. Drybrushing destroys your brushes.

Truth! That bug brush was great for the terrain but probably too big for the minis.

Here's the exploring colors video that led me to highlight the pink/magenta tree cysts with Verdigris. Looks appropriately sickly and awesome! I had no idea what color theory was and my wife had stated that I need an adult to dress me if I want to be color coordinated. I'm a math guy, not an art guy! But this series on colors was fascinating and super helpful.

I will now get a bug brush just to avoid admitting to a spelling error. 😄

@KarpetRydOFunk Offending all kiwis with my poor impressions does sound easier than making a bug brush. I'm in!

As someone who has never even been to New Zealand, I support your decision!

I can't recommend this guy enough https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCKCXiyi3kwELyFpPKq2RgLw?reload=9 if you want mini painting to go to "art" level vs the basics. There's some great videos about colour theory too, colour theory rocks!

He also introduces you to oil painting on minis, which is cool though I haven't gotten that deep yet.

its hard to not buy everything at once, or try to pick which ones you will need first

Matte finish from Scale 75 gives comic book look, which is perfect for Marvel Crisis Protocol, but not as much for Oathsworn

Yeah. I think as my collection gets used up I will try to swap to the CMYK paint tubes and learn to mix myself. A challenge and also increases your knowledge of color theory through practice

Though I will definitely keep buying contrast paints, which I think have a strong niche
