He's the creator of crossnotes, another note taking app that emphasizes on bidirectional linking as well, was in contact with him a few months ago

ah, nice! i think he's using the same core library for both crossnote and markdown-preview

Omg the productivity space is obsessed with bidirectional linking stuff

i'm still holding out for hierarchies 😇

Yeah dendron combines both of the older days (hirarchies) and the new era (bidirectional linking)

@User hierarchies is such a game changer, and is simultaneously what put me off trying Dendron (I really wanted to try the "flat hierarchy with just links" concept) and later drew me in again: I just couldn't organise myself with a flat structure and ended up spreading notes out

I think the key thing that changed my perspective was the ease of restructuring hierarchies, it gives you the confidence to just write, safe in the knowledge that you can just restructure it later

I am very much looking forward to when hierarchies finally clicks for me. I am getting to that point where the flat structure is becoming rather monolithic.

I've noticed that this is a frequent discussion point since joining this Discord server. In a set of notes that changes often I don't think you can ever consider your hierarchy complete. I find that having to move notes down another level is actually a sign that I've learned more, and the act of reviewing them probably helps with recollection. Don't be scared of losing notes in the hierarchy, I guess, lookup, backlinks and a bit of find in files can always find your notes

I think it's easy to try and come up with The One True Schema or Hierarchy, especially as a software guy 👼

I think youve hit it on the nose there. When I start an idea its just one file (usually the parent) which eventually becomes empty as more sub-entries spring up. I guess I just want to feel like im not swimming in a bath of individual notes but a connected graph that has a bit of rigidity. Right now the search tool provides a lot of that control though, 99% of what I need.

That sounds like how I start -- have a single broad topic for the note, then I'll break sections of the larger note down (make a selection, Cmd+L to bring up lookup with the name of the current note, append .somesometopic and hit enter to create a new note with the selected text)

I find it easier to start broad then narrow down what I've written. You can always use references to resurface those more focused notes when you're trying to frame a higher level concept

(slight disclaimer: I don't use schemas yet, so it'll be interesting to see how they change my thinking, if at all 😁 )

+100 on their being no true hierarchy. these things change over time and that the nature of learning 🙂

Loving how frictionless Dendron makes refactoring notes and titles. It's like taking notes becoming a polynomial time bounded activity instead of a exponential time bounded one.

@User we have an issue out for that: https://github.com/dendronhq/dendron/issues/269 unfortunately, might be a while until i can get around to it since we have a backlog of existing things (like wildcard noteref support 😉 )
