@User @User still working on the elevator pitch πŸ˜… the 10,000 ft north star answer: dendron is a better way for people to create, reference, and share knowledge the specific current dendron-preview answer: dendron is a hierarchal first note taking tool that lets you find your information in seconds regardless of how many notes you have

I got hooked on Dendron due to hierarchy and schema in combination with fast search but I recently discovered refactoring a.k.a. Amoeba pattern. This is really a killer feature for me since I no longer need to think if I need a new note and which others to link to. I start however I see fit and can reorganise later if appropriate.

@User just instead of spamming too much in introductions, in case that matters: I actually did have one question. I have not dug through roadmap or other writings too thoroughly yet, but I would normally like to be able to easily capture notes on mobile (iOS currently), preferably directly into my main second brain system. So far in trying out Dendron, I have just resorted to using an app that is quite adept at quick capture (and is tailored for working with markdown), called Drafts.

However, to input into Dendron, so far I have to manually open drafts on my macbook and copy and paste the relevant contents

This is certainly not a deal breaker, but it does feel a bit redundant... however once I spend a bit more time playing with settings, I think I can set it up to be more seamless by having a Dendron workspace resident IN my Drafts folder of my iCloud Drive (since that is where Drafts saves to)

Curious what others have settled on for mobile capture / workflows

I'm not sure that if Kevin is planning to make a mobile client or quick capturing related stuff in the future, but in chrome you can use this extension to do quick capture https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/markdownload-markdown-web/pcmpcfapbekmbjjkdalcgopdkipoggdi?hl=en-GB

Thanks, I will take a look at it. Even if he is not, I am under the impression that it should not be TOO bad to work around it by using SOMETHING on my phone to edit/create .md files in a folder on my iCloud drive that contains a dendron workspace. The only concern I have with that is possibly corrupting the front matter and/or if it will cause problems to not have any front matter

I'm not sure that any errors will occur or not since I do not own an apple device, but post here if any errors occurs then

So just as a quick test, I created a blank .md file in the workspace (outside of vsCode). I can open it in dendron, however it has no frontmatter, which means it has no ID so dendron does not actually recognize it. I wonder if there is a way to force it to "adopt" a markdown file that has no front matter and add it into its system

Ok cool bit more digging the Doctor command Adds Front matter to md files that do not have it

So it is entirely possible to tinker with md files on mobile and then use that command to "introduce then" properly to the dendron index once I am back on my computer

@User So it is entirely possible to tinker with md files on mobile and then use that command to "introduce then" properly to the dendron index once I am back on my computer yep. dendron will index files fine with no frontmatter. it will generate a virtual 'id' at index time. the downside of this approach is that if you decide to publish your notes, you would not have a stable link because we link based on id: https://dendron.so/notes/5fcb8564-7209-4a80-9bb8-025bc8eb489b.html#permanent-ids there's also additional benefits like updating metadata as well as descriptions which will popup in the lookup.

Thanks, I will have to play with it some more and see what workflow makes sense. So far drafts has served as a glorified dumping grounds for snippets of information I want to refer back to but do not want to take the time to fully process or file right away. Due to my schedule, work, and family life I usually only have the luxury of at most one concentrate burst of focused work in front of a computer each day... fairly late after everyone else is in bed. Sooo, I will have to work out a solid mobile work flow from iOS into Dendron but I think it will be doable, even without a dedicated app. If I come up with anything really useful I will let the community know in case it helps anyone else who is heavy on mobile like me.

i used drafts in a former life. i haven't looked into this but it should be possible to use a script to add notes: https://docs.getdrafts.com/docs/actions/steps/advanced#script

eg. if you sync your notes via dropbox, you can have drafts sync to dropbox

I know it’s probably foolish to reinvent the wheel but I also have had the idea of writing my own program to sync files using AWS. I’m sure you have thoughts on on that idea.
  • k

    10/25/2020, 10:16 PM
haha, sometimes wheels need something extra. aws has no end of solutions for sync (eg. code commit for private github hosting, amplify for private publishing, lambda for arbitrary cloud based code execution)

I really gotta ask Kevin: why do you often use "hierarchal" instead of "hierarchical"? Wiki says it means "Relating to a hierarch" which seems not the intended meaning (unless it's a plan to attract some church hierarchs to Dendron?) https://wikidiff.com/hierarchal/hierarchical
