I actually disagree. Obsidian felt goo-ey to me and I didn't like that the environment was locked down. Having it in vscode lets me have things how I want to have them and I can plug it into more things.

Totally - I just prefer my software to be open. I came from Joplin which was great for its open-ness but super rough. Obsidian solved enough problems visually for me that it was worth getting attached (with the knowledge that the structure of my notes would be my own but not the GUI). Dendron marries those two concerns up perfectly.

    why not the GUI?

Because I don't control it and it could go in a direction easily that I don't like + I can't extend it or change it completely which means that ideological changes could cause friction in my knowledge management. vscode is also more agnostic to content. Obsidian is pretty because it wants to go commercial at some point

But I think I'll don't make the switch (if obsidian has the publish feature) so quick (at least for the next couple months), since I didn't stick to a legit workflow for a long time

obsidian definitely has a more friendly getting started experienced. i don't think user friendliness and customization is mutually exclusive but its a tough balance to navigate. but i would say dendron has a lot of things it could do to make it friendlier to use, especially for new users 😅

I'm struggling between see dendron and obsidian 😆 But I'll continue using dendron since I have built a big palace of knowledge in it

The thing I like about Dendron is that I don't need a separate application for it. I can use it from within VSCode, which I do most of my programming and editing in anyway.

Sorry to jump here, but I think Dendron and Foam are great tools. But as normal users, I don’t think many of us care about if the app is open source or not. Normal users care much about the accessibility of the app, is it friendly for users or not. To install Obsidian, I need only to click on their exe file, and done. The UI is easy to understand and many youtube tutorials are there. This is why I think Obsidian “maybe” has more users than Roam currently. The developers also are extremely active (and I see Dendron’s developer is also very active). I don’t know I feel if Foam and Dendron have apps without relying on VSCode, they would reach more users.

However, the point of Dendron (I don't know much about Foam) is not only open source. I believe relying on VSC saves a lot of time in unneccesary progress, and the developers can focus on more note taking related features. This doesn't mean Dendron should not go open source (as well as other apps). Also @User said there will be an standalone app in the future, so let's wait and see.

Does Dendron support block referencing? I thought Foam does that only compared to Obsidian and Dendron.
