plan on giving this a shot after trying a million different note apps. at the moment i've reverted to just writing .md files to a few folders, and this seems like a natural augmentation of that

@User yeah, I was in the same boat before building dendron. there were too many choices, so I created another one with Dendron πŸ™‚ one of our core principles is that your data is yours and should be able to move freely. plain text, local markdown files go a long way towards that

Thanks, Hi!! @kevins8 Dendron being about local data first is what sold me tbh, not to mention how much it’s updating lol

Have to say I'm pretty impressed by all the work you have done with Dendron, and I'm also starting to warm up to the dot-based note hierarchies!

@User thanks πŸ™‚ it's come a long way from when it first launched. really helps having a community of awesome users to help validate and build upon the initial concept!

while converting some of my existing notes into dendron hierarchies, I tried to use schemas to structure them a bit better. Got it finally working, but I guess both the schema statement AND the related note has to be in place before dendron shows those properly in the lookup (?). I first tried to create just the schema statements, and wondered why I cannot see them in the lookup dropdown (or maybe I just did something incorrectly). Anyway if there is such a relation, I managed to miss it while reading the documentation.

yeah, that's correct. you won't see anything if you just create the schemas. my usual workflow is to first create the hierarchy and THEN create the schema describing the hierarchy. you'll have to run
    reload index
afterwards for it to show up. and as far as documentation, that's definitely still an area of investment for dendron, especially when it comes to schemas πŸ˜…

you can visualize your schemas using the
    Show Schema Graph
    command https://www.dendron.so/notes/587e6d62-3c5b-49b0-aedc-02f62f0448e6.html#dendron-show-schema-graph

spotted that, I like graphs! :). Now starting to get hang of the dendron workflow. I guess it might be pretty typical scenario that a new user has a heap of old notes with all kinds of messy stuff. It would be nice to see a page explaining "how to migrate your old stuff into dendron" - and with migration not just getting them to load, but creating "order from chaos". Basically bunch of really easy questions, like "do I have to have root.md", "should I start creating links into that file for sub-pages, or how do I create the hierarchy", "if I use schemas, can I put everything into single file". I managed to fumble even by loading the root folder instead the vault folder into vscode, and then wondered why scratch notes go into root, while others are in vault

but have to acknowledge the work that you have done already - the existing docs are absolutely helpful, and I can just imagine the amount of hours it has taken to write them

I really like the suggestion about "migrating old stuff into dendron". This could probably be further elaborated depending on where people are coming from. As for all the questions you've mentioned - I think I'm going to answer them and then put it up on our FAQ! And thanks, I've been trying to document everything as I go along but I inevitably miss stuff. This is especially true as I've been using this style of note taking for so long that I end up taking a lot of things for granted thanks for taking the time to leave feedback and giving dendron a chance πŸ™‚

hmm, are "updated" and "created" frontmatter attributes something that could be configured away? Personally I'd be happy to just check these from git if needed, but maybe you need those for some other purpose?
