Or an even better question, OT for this channel - does anyone have a solution to the desktop icons blinking in Windows Server 2016 when redirecting the Desktop?
n
Are they constantly blinking, or only when being applied? We see it on the initial Desktop folder redirection after the desktop loads, using WEM to apply the settings.
t
They blink often. More often than just when applying / logging in. But not constantly. Found several articles that address the problem, and none of the solutions worked for us.
n
Okay, definitely different than what we experienced. I kept <https://tech.xenit.se/flickering-desktop-icons-re-directed-folder|this> link in my back pocket when we noticed it, but never had to implement it.
t
Yeah, that's the one we mostly used. Not working at all.
m
Strange, we have a few customers running server 2016 with redirected Desktop and I haven't seen that issue. 🤔 Anyway, the users are not working when they see their Desktop, so the question is why they are aware of that issue 😉
t
Our desktop is currently in Test (not full Prod yet), and my team has been on it and we are the ones that have noticed it the most. Having multiple monitors means that the desktop icons are usually visible, and it's quite annoying to have an EDM party happening out of the corner of your eye 😆
d
The icon blinking thing is a Microsoft issue. I can reproduce the same problem via RDP with the desktop redirected.
no fslogix or citrix involved
m
Any special shortcuts on the desktop? Do you have the "Network" icon on the Desktop? We hide this one in our environments. Do you also have that with an admin account?
t
No special icons. No Network icon. Admin accounts don't have desktop redirection enabled. @David Ott did you find a solution? I've tried many things, and nothing is working.
k
@Tim Riegler how are these desktop icons created? Via group policy preferences?
d
@Tim Riegler I just found a lot of people complaining about the same thing
We also experienced this issue in our environment. We were able to resolve it with this workaround: Create Registrykey HKEY_CURRENT\USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} on user logon. The creation of this key is exactly what happens when the user launches the folder options window with the view tab.
from the spiceworks link... i tried it... still get the flicker
t
@Kasper Johansen We redirect the Desktop to a network share - all users are redirected to the same network share, then we control access to the icons via Access Based Enumeration.
@David Ott that is the exact same fix we tried, with the same result as yours. I've tried using GPP and WEM to create it, and neither affects the flicker at all. I've verified via ControlUp and Process Monitor that the registry key is there and is not throwing the errors from the https://tech.xenit.se/flickering-desktop-icons-re-directed-folder article.
@James Rankin I know you do quite a bit with folder redirections with FSL - have you seen the problem mentioned in the OP for this thread? We would like to redirect all users' desktops to a single folder on our write cache drive, and it only works for one user.
j
Is this a shared host or a dedicated one? Why not redirect the Desktop folder for all users through Folder Redirection and use ABE/NTFS to tie it down? I've never seen redirected desktops with flickering icons - although I have seen many refresh issues with it. Does the same thing happen if you simply redirect via the Registry instead?
t
This is shared host, and we normally do folder redirect and ABE, and that's when we noticed the flicker with 2016. Maybe flicker == refresh. We have not tried redirecting with the registry yet, I'll give it a shot and let you know. Thank you.
k
@Tim Riegler are you sure that the redirections.xml actually apply? The reason I ask is that it looks like you are using a wildcard. Whenever I use wildcards in the redirections.xml file, it does not apply and an error is logged in the FSLogix agent
