Here is the data on my current profile share for our Windows 7 (Server 2008 R2) environment: 326 profiles All profiles 503.6GB Largest 15GB Smallest 84MB Average 1.5GB
n
How in the world do you have an 84MB container? Those things seem to start out at 196MB for us - even an ODFC container with literally no data in it.
The reason I even ask this is because I found out that we've got a lot of projects moving their storage to VMAX, and I should claim the space I need right now before we have to go the route of adding storage. So I'm basically asking for a pair of 3-5TB shares. I'm worried about filling up those volumes and then having the storage guys tell me that they can't extend the volume further.
r
ODFC - 100 users and 255GB
Profiles = 300GB
granted, that's RAW with no dedup/compression. For example, my profiles are 300GB, but only 46GB on disk
n
We don't have dedup enabled in VMAX, so we're relying solely on compression there. This is all for W10 VDAs, and currently we're at around 330 users, though 3k or so actually have access to the desktop.
r
is VMAX hosting the SMB share? (i'm not familar with it)
n
It's a Server 2016 VM on ESX
r
you could do the dedup in Windows, if you wanted
it works
n
At this point, I care less about the back end stuff as I do the usable space in our share.
That's the storage team's problem. 🙂

We average 4.7GB for ODFC (Teams, OST, OneDrive, Lync/Skype)
t
Profile - 932 items, 468GB on disk; 120 GB on SAN w/ dedup & compression. ODFC - 933 items, 1.11TB on disk; 675GB on SAN w/ dedup & compression.
The shares themselves are both 4TB, to allow for growth

@Nick Panaccio the 84MB profiles are from when I converted the profiles from UPM to FSL with my script --> mostly test/qa accounts that nobody uses
n
Ahhh, gotcha. Based on these responses - all appreciated, BTW - I'm on the right track. In the process now of having our volumes expanded to 4TB so that I can rest a little easier. As for the ODFC, I'm going to discuss this with my team, but I'm wondering if starting at 1 month of cache is worth trying initially, since I believe the OST will expand if you increase that down the road. I don't know if the reverse works, going from 3 to 1 and having the OST shrink.
t
The OST never shrinks. You would have to delete / recreate. We set ours to 1 year, then have GPOs for 2 years and All. Configured to AD security group. Everyone starts at 1 year, if you need more, you request it, we add you to the group, next login your emails magically show up.

FWIW we’re starting at 3 months, but we use Mimecast for mail archiving which has an Outlook add-in that our staff have become accustomed to using. We have a 6 month retention on the mailbox itself (a luxury afforded due to archiving/Mimecast). Moving to Exchange Onljne over the coming months so will see how things change!
t
O365 mailboxes (for E3) start at 50GB!!!! We are exploring the auto-archive feature. What a pain!

What is the size of your Roaming Search Database (Frx-File in AppData\Roaming) ? I wonder if there‘s a way to roughly forecast the size depenent on the ost file size or outlook Elements...?
