Hey Mike, the challenge you have is storage related. Is it shared storage? If so that means raw device mappings in VMware it guest iScsi but either way, it means no snapshots. This means Veeam will need an agent deployed or you replicate your files to a third location and then backup using Veeam.
If you have a single SAN or Storage location SOFS probably isn't necessary. Just a standard Failover Cluster with CA enabled on the share.

We're in the process of putting a recommendation together for the customer. Today the VMs have vmdks in the VMware datastores so no RDM.
l
Large size client or small?
m
it's a Win10 Horizon View VDI Pilot 50-250 users, eventually wants to scale to 5000 users
Also the VDI environment has a Dell VxFlex OS vSAN - not sure how much storage is available there. The other VMware clusters use a few different IBM SANs
l
Okay. If you can supply a physical storage device that can handle the IOPS then I recommend a failover cluster. If you need to distribute the load a d scale you'll want SOFS. SOFS doesn't require RDM and can use vmdk instead. It does the storage replication between nodes for you though so backups can be inconsistent across nodes. It's tricky.
m
With the SOFS do you deploy Veeam agents that are MS cluster aware?
l
Looks like you'll be going with SOFS. In that scenario I'd recommend SOFS with a single node replication to a secondary location using bvckup, then back this up with Veeam. It does mean you require a bucket load of storage.
See previous comment. The veamm agents can backup the data using VSS but you're never guaranteed a consistent backup due to how the load is distributed. I find the best way is the above. Bvckup provides block level replication btw...
m
Gotcha and thank you! - Customer has OSTs & OneDrive in the Profile Container today. If you were to split the profile & outlook containers out to avoid backing up the OSTs and OneDrive in the Outlook Container (to save on storage) would you need to add more nodes or would you only pick the profile share in Veeam or Bvckup?

So I think System Center DPM 2019 UR1 can handle this type of backup now. It just came out so I have not tested, but the feature for backing up files on CSVFS over REFS is there now.
Also to work around this issue, I made a project to backup FSLogix profile disks as a file hierarchy, and clean temp files, defrag, optimize, and shrink the vhds. The backup is much smaller because it ignores the appdata\local and appdata\locallow folders. https://github.com/BronsonMagnan/FSLogixBackup

Nice one Bronson, I wrote something very similar for a project. Copy the vhd contents to a file server OOH. Nice to see we're on the same page.

Thank you Leee and Bronson!
l
You are so welcome Mike, anytime.

@Leee Jeffries Lee I actually wanted to use your script, and it was the inspiration, but because it was not on Github with a License, I had to rebuild from scratch. There were some other things I wanted to accomplish as well, like being agnostic to samAccountName-SID ordering in the paths , cleaning temp files, doing maintenance on the file system and vhd, etc.
@Mike Driest you are most welcome, please let me know if you have an questions or feedback with the project.

@Bronson Magnanyou should have reached out man, I would have been happy to pass you a copy. No worries though, yours is better and well thought out.
