Igel?
πŸ‘ 1
l
Igel or Elux In my opinion.
a
Anything from stratodesk ?
d
Is "Eagle" supposed to be IGEL? If so, I don't think IGEL is too expensive. It isn't really cheap, but I think it is a pretty good value. It has a nice central management and secure endpoint. It is so much easier to use that Stratodesk, imo. We have a couple Workspace Hubs we manage with Stratodesk and it is no where near the platform that IGEL has. IGELs console needs an update from the standpoint of being web-based or whatever, but it is still very nice.

If you haven't played around with it, you should. They have NFR licenses you can get through their community to be able to do testing and such with. They also have a nice getting started guide that takes one through some basic customizations to get aquatinted with the product. Speaking of Community, it's awesome!
t
Dell thin clients come with WDM (Wyse Device Management), which I assume is what you do not like? Careful, as some Dell/Wyse thin clients are not able to be managed by other software packages. FOr example, our old Xenith series is not compatible with at least Stratodesk and probably also not with Igel's offering.
j
Igel all the way.
WEM also has a Transformer feature for Windows endpoints.
u
IGEL or Stratodesk Depending on the volume you have, IGEL might seem expensive.
n
i run stratodesk (ncomputing rxhdx), very happy with them! easy to manage, cheap, work from home for free (igel charges for their gateway)
they've got clients with 1000's of units, so its not mickey mouse either
c
Another vote for IGEL, up front cost might seem higher but you save on hardware and admin time looking after the environment hands down.
n
And stratodesk can re-purpose hardware just like igel can, x86 and arm
l
I've used both, iGel has a more friendly UI by far bit is more expensive. In the grand scheme of things they do achieve the same goals though.
On the igel front. You don't necessarily need the gateway. Only for management. You can have a WFH user with a web logon.
n
they said the gateway was needed for users who work from home. not true?
obviously we need to be able to manage devices outside the network
also stratodesk is an appliance, which i like, less windows the better, setup is a few clicks
l
Na, not true. You can configure web sessions. This works as it's standard receiver. Depends on the detail.
n
entirely web based...
l
True Nick. UMS is very easy to use in comparison though. As I say, I've used both and don't really have a bias. They both do the same job.
a
Currently most important for us is compatibility with USB based devices. Dell with own software seems to be difficult with compatibility:-(
n
i cant speak for igel, however i have scanners, printers, impravata and no issues
πŸ‘ 1
l
What types of USB devices?
n
they jsut redirect entirely into the session, so nothing needs to be touched on the device itself thru stratodesk
l
Anything like integrated Skype phones that require a special driver can be problematic but in general unless there is some special functionality you should be good.
Igel or Strato will do the job.
a
USB smart card readers
Gemalto
l
Will be fine. The gemalto driver goes on the OS and the device is passed through. USB card readers are the same.
a
We can see more issues with Thin Clients (linux based VMware horizon client) vs MS Horizon client software
n
linux thin clients are always a different animal than a pc
l
Wait till you start to try and manage them. Lol
a
Additionally some websites do not work correctly via linux client vs MS version. Forms and functions on websites do not work correctly compare to MS windows horizon thin client :-(
l
The latest versions of these OS use Firefox, I'd give it another go. I'd be interested to see the links though.
a
Users can see all USB scanners from all sessions. Any option to limit visibility to β€œown” session/scanner on horizon?
n
stratodesk now has chromium
im a citrix guy, i know little about horizon
l
I'm not sure in horizon. Sorry Arthur.
j
Windows 10 mini PC's - you will never beat their performance and capability. No half baked iterations of receiver, no limits on hand off, probably won't beat the price either...you just gotta figure out the best way to manage them 😳 Igel from a management perspective is amazing and the conversion capability is cool - software pricing is always negotiable, you want grunt in your endpoint with citrix these days
πŸ‘ 1
l
I'm coining that Mr Kindon, "You want grunt in your endpoint these days" ;-)
j
too many years of seeing customers limited due to endpoints - never see people limited on Windows endpoints πŸ™‚
l
But managing them..... Just updates are a pain. Again though it depends. Budget being a major driver in my experience. I can't wait to hash this stuff out with you in person.
c
That's the big issue, the constant Windows updates from MS, then ensuring that your local apps (and hardware drivers) are compatible with the new build all the time as well as ongoing security patching. Agreed it's a more rock solid solution overall, just not the ongoing admin and manageability of them.
c
Why not wyse?
j
yeah agreed there is overhead, i dont have to manage them so i am a little jaded - i get sick of being blocked by limitations on thin clients
@Cory Zaner my biggest problem with wyse (it's been a while) is the lack of native receiver functionality - it used to be different than then Citrix release or something similar
j
same with HP, they modify Workspace App with their own sauce and patch it fairly irregularly. With IGEL, you always get latest Linux Workspace App within a month max.
c
HP and Wyse develop their own 'Receiver/Workspace App' and because their OS's are 'thin' they dont have the full feature set that the Windows and Linux ones do. Ask Wyse (and maybe HP) when they'll support EDT, its been out for years now and Wyse still don't support it.

j
then we could start on BCR.... but i won't stir that pot because noone wins
n
i finally got bcr figured out, no issues with stratodesk or windows clients
HP thinpro is a dumpster fire! ugh. i hate mine. i loaded 7.1 thinpro and it won't connect to cvad with the factory image, ticket open for 3 weeks now
j
Bcr works fine on IGEL too
n
wyse is a lost cause in my book, no one should be looking at them for net new
j
However embedded videos are not supported and the chrome addin breaks some websites even if they are not whitelisted
n
im hoping bcr v2 removes the whitelist stuff and just redirects to the endpoint when it sees video. i can't possibly whitelist every news site for users
πŸ‘ 1
j
Yeah they need wildcard support to whitelist or blacklist all websites
n
i just want a simple option, "Redirect video, y/n?"
j
A user toggle on the chrome extension would be nice too
j
@Jonathan Pitre if you sorted BCR on IGEL i would love to know how you did it - general consensus seems to be that it's broken - i saw it fundamentally changing how BCR should operate and falling on it's head 😞
c
We wanted igel, but the hardware it horrible. We went with dell. They seem to have come a long way, we only ordered 30 so very little investment.
j
Igel is a software company
You can install their os on pretty much anything
c
Agree, Dell make good hardware. Thought about putting the IGEL OS on that Dell hardware @Cory Zaner
c
Yes, but hard to do zero touch if we have to install an OS. Installing igel from my exp is a PITA
j
we have a customer looking to shift their recent dell investment over to IGEL to open it all up - again..cheap dell mini PC's with a load of grunt, IGEL on top shrugs world is your oyster
c
I had 3 demo units and several pocket udp and could never update the os. Maybe it’s just me. πŸ˜‚
c
There are methods available to deploy the IGEL OS onto other hardware, but if you only have 30 then it wouldnt take very long to do them manually, once its on there then future firmware updates are very easy.
j
I got auto update on boot setup, it works great
c
My big concern was the remote site getting new hardware and us having to image them. This is a pilot so it’s ok it we learn that igel is better.
We have a ton of small sites with no it guy
j
You can run update remotely with Igel ICG and an external FTP, you can even launch remote secure vnc connections
d
coming into this one later. but I’ll say eLux
n
cory check out ncomputing / stratodesk, their updates are a 2 click process, doesn't matter where the unit is located. no user involvement at all, literally the best i have seen
t
I've also used Stratodesk and found it very stable and reasonable, also price-wise.
n
you're re-tiring @Tobias Kreidl you don't count anymore, LOL
t
Oh, yeah? Watch this: Counting ... 1, 2, 3, 4, ... 😁
n
So jealous!
t
I may be working some still --- time will tell. The really nice part, though, is I will not have to. πŸ˜‰ I do have other business ventures that are on-going, so it's just the NAU part that's the actual retirement chunk.
