You'd need to change the setting to Local Profile instead of Redirect to a file share.
a
cool thanks Carl! i did see that option......so right now if we want to migrate users from the redirect to onedrive, i know we can use the sharepoint migration tool to move the content but say we had 50 people we wanted to migrate one night......could we migrate the content, change that policy and obviously set the onedrive policies correctly in 1 swoop and be good or would this end up having to be something where the users have to log in 1 after the redirection policy is changed first and THEN set the onedrive policy to point those folders out? really hoping to not complicate this on the user end if we can avoid it
c
I just set the below in my folder redirection GPO's then disable the policy and the contents is then copied back locally to the profile. At that stage i then configure known folder move via the onedrive admx
m
yeah KFM won’t work if you already have redirections so if you’re using that you need to redirect locally before enabling it
a
thats an intriguing idea......so one little wrinkle here that we have is we map a U: for everyone at login (home drive) and have peoples documents folder redirected as a subfolder in that U:. If we would change this policy to move things back it would obviously move desktop , documents, etc back to local but we'd still have a duplicate "documents" folder in their U: if you're following we'd have to deal with. in the end we have to move all data in each persons U: but if we can handle the known folders first we could use sharepoint migration tool for that i'd think
m
doesn’t the policy “move” it back and not “copy” it back?
so you shouldn’t end up with dupes
a
ok cool that would be helpful then for sure if thats the case. alright in the spirit of just walking this one out.....so if we change that policy to move back one night when a group of people are logged out, what would we expect the next login? i'd imagine initially documents and desktop would be empty and slowly start to populate as the data gets moved from the old redirect location back to local?
m
I think it happens on next login
a
so what about folders that are currently set like this (ie. Photos).... if we want them to go local as well so we can then go to Known Folders / Onedrive should we keep the setting to follow Documents like it currently is?
d
I‘d guess you don’t want it to be a subfolder of documents, probably better to move it back to the default location in the user profile.
a
that was my guess too......it looks like it was only the Music folder for some reason so just moving them back to their own. thanks for the help!
alright i'm finally getting a chance to test this out and we have things setup for the folder redirection back to local per everyones great directions here.....(Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, etc) and its working for every folder EXCEPT desktop even though we have that one set up exactly the same in the policy as the others. gpresult shows all the successful ones but ommits desktop and no mention of why. would anyone have any idea what to even look for? here's a quick screenshot of our gpresult and a shot of our current policy (showing an example of desktop and documents for comparison
m
That’s odd, we were doing redirected desktop as well.
I vaguely remember there is some other GPO security setting that can conflict with this but it’s foggy, might be something to do with restricting access to C: drive through IE/explorer.
a
in my test i actually have the test user in a OU where the only policy its getting (other than the default domain policy) is this desktop redirect back to local. I did see this in the Folder Redirection event log but not sure what to make of it yet.
and right before that i get this event
m
I wonder if the redirect is tattooed in the profile registry
a
i do see the Desktop path under this showing the network location still. i know i could change it manually but obviously that would defeat the purpose of the policy right.
m
That needs to be set back before OneDrive will redirect it
Not sure why the policy isn’t cleaning it up
a
right at this point all i'm doing is trying to get things set back to local. once that works i'll work on the known folder side of things
circling back on this we found why Desktop wasnt working. apparently one of the test pdf's on my test accounts Desktop i copied from my desktop to its desktop network redirected folder so it applied permissions for me but not that user. apparently the policy to move back to local uses that logged in users account to move content and if ANY single file has permission issues like that the entire process flat out fails which is pretty disappointing. concerns me a bit when we unleash this on 500 users if it fails theres really no way to isolate what the culprit is if they have a lot of files
