If you activate Profile Container without sorting anything out via Redirection.xml. Then everything from your Profile, except The TEMP (TMP) folder location and The IE Cache folder location into the container.
k
Great thanks. What could be the benefit then of seperating the office cointainer feature from the profile container?
d
There are also very different opinions. I separate this mainly because I do not include Office Container data in the backup. If the office container is broken or the file server dies, it copies the data into a new container the next time. Profiles is just a bit more important, in the eyes of the user.
and in most cases i still use other profile solutions (mostly upm) and only use office container for teams and microsoft365 apps.
k
well, I've been doing that too. UPM with Office Container for O365. But I'm starting a new project now and can't seem to find a valid reason not to use the complete FSLogix Profile container
the concept of traditional profiles where data is copied or streamed upon logon / logoff seems a bit outdated. Also, the filtering on includes & excludes can be a pain in the ass. So just capturing the entire profile in a VHDX seems more ... 2021 🙂

Yes, if the customer is comfortable with the limitations, it is also my preferred method.
k
What are the limitations exactly?
d
1. no multi session support. So it is not possible to open a published app with the same profile (in write access). Or open 2 desktops with the same profile at the same time.
2. you have very large profiles. If you want to have small profiles, you should use UPm and so on. With Profile Container we are not talking about whitelisting what you need. But from Blacklistening what one does not need. And you should not do that.
Leave the profile as it is and live with the size.
k
I thought that multi-session support was possible with latest releases. Other related topic, Since Citrix supports putting an entire profile in it's own profile container since CVAD 2103, which does support multi sessions, which would be preferred? Any experience with Citrix Profile Containers?
d
no good experiences made. and yes you can get multi session support for profile container via citrix upm from citrix version 2003. but my customers are all on ltsr path and therefore this is not an option. furthermore it is not a native support, but also only tricked by citrix for fslogix.
k
ok, great. Thanks for your input !
much appreciated

i believe james rankin did a blog on citrix profile contrainers, it works, thats about all he covered though. it is nice to have 1 throat to choke with paid support as opposed to ms support

Manuel you mentioned different profile as u don't want to get back up og office container but how u differentiate between folder at backup level as it take backup of whole profile share path. Suppose we have three folder for user in one we have redirected folder like desktop and download other two are profile and office container how u will take backup of folder which has desktop and downloaded folder for all users.
d
I don't make any differences at the folder level. the complete profile container is backed up and the office container is not.
r
So what logic u used to copy only profile container not office container for all users or u have different locations for profile container and office container
d
ah sry....i have different location for the different container types
r
Gotcha I have single location so not possible for me
d
sry in my head the differentiation was clearer than in my text 🙂
