I have a customer that uses quite a few moonshot chassis for high performance bare metal citrix sessions
j
There's still physical out there.
r
That is/was such cool tech
n
i think carl webster did a bit of moonshot

Dane Young
j
We are, 7000 HP Z2s in racks
k
Isn't Moonshot EOL?
w
nope new ones are on order for that customer
I believe 10-12 more chassis or something from what I last heard
w
@Neil Spellings has done a LOT of Moonshot work. I love Moonshot but haven't done a Moonshot project since October 2016.
r
PVS to bare metal is just so neat...
j
building a common image not so much lol

we were doing pvs to computer labs a few years ago. Until the network got in the way...
watching 100's of computers boot and grab that image was pretty cool
j
was popular in schools but still had it's challenges. yeah networking...
n
I did a few very large Moonshot on bare metal projects yes. Performance was blistering, and GPU access for everyone
Sadly HPE have EOL the platform ...it was just too niche for their accountants sadly.

The HP z2 minis look like a viable solution. I dont want to think about the cabling of that
n
Most people seem to be doing VDI in the cloud these days, and given the big cloud providers weren't buying Moonshot, the market was shrinking rapidly, so the writing was on the wall really for such a bespoke hardware platform, despite it's benefits

From what I've been hearing @Neil Spellings, HPe was mostly ‘giving’ the solution away, minimal margins made engineering/innovation a cost center vs profit center but that's just from hear say?
j
I’m seeing hybrid

Most of the Moonshot customers I worked with were big banks who could negotiate good discounts from HPE based on the big order quantities. That probably impacted the profitability of that business line compared to others in HPE, and the technology was too bespoke for many smaller companies to consider.
t
my previous company I worked at in banking, we used moonshot around 11 chassis. PVS streamed Server 2019 pa's and full desktop and also around 14 traders bar metal installed. Different enddevices, including dell 5070 extended with 6 screens.
r
@James Rankin how do you manage those Z2? do you treat them as "managed clients" or streamed with PVS?
j
Nah, everything here is managed extremely badly currently. They're literally fully SCCM-managed builds with RemotePC. This will change, as soon as I can get some traction, but right now they're just treated like physical desktops that just happen to have a VDA
k
Everytime I read System Center Conf Manager it sends shivers down my spine.
j
I absolutely despise Config Manager. I want to oversee its death
r
Do you consider to stream to those Z2 with PVS?
j
No, I'm not putting PVS in here
r
I'm considering it for a centralized high-performance workplace which we are designing for a customer. I have to do some tests, don't have any experience in bare-metal streaming.
a
If not Config Mgr and not PVS, how are you getting an image to them? Are you thinking Azure AD joined and intune?
