Anyone in here dealt with reparenting / changing license providers in Citrix cloud. Working with a client to change their license provider and was curious if anyone has been through this effort. Any re-tooling involved? Client is currently using Citrix DaaS and Citrix Gateway through Citrix Cloud with Cloud Connectors
j
when you say license providers, do you mean the partner they are purchasing the Citrix licenses from? there is only 1 license distributor in North America, and Europe (Arrow) for Citrix licenses. Or do you mean they are changing the license type from say platform to UHMC or CSP UHMC?
d
yes the partner purchasing license from
thanks for clarifiying question
j
No, there should be no real change from the DaaS portal. If the licenses overlap in end and start dates there is an option to select the default licenses being used by DaaS when more than one type exist at the same time. One difference is if they were in a CSP license model. That would require multiple changes by the vendor providing the CSP licenses, and is dependent on if the customer is in a single tenant DaaS portal or multi-tenant portal.
d
single tenant portal
j
if it is not CSP, once the licenses are allocated to the customer tenant, they will just appear, and be there.
The customer can verify the licenses in their DaaS portal under their user name on the top right, then Account Settings > Orders.
If they have multiple license types available at the same time, have them check in the portal under DaaS > Settings > Assign license

how would i know if the licensing I have is CSP or not...
j
if it's per user, and not concurrent user. that's the easiest way
d
hmmm so I'm the partner trying to use a Citrix universal for MSP user entitlement to license a single tenant account.. (I already told the client that this may or may not actually be something that works as I've never tried it.. I always use this license for on prem solutions with a "local" ADC and citrix license server for CVAD) my goal here is to figure out if I can shortcut my way to just licensing their Citrix Cloud environment for a few months or if we need to build the DDC's license server etc on prem to use the license that I have.
j
ok so yeah, that's a CSP. you can't create single tenant DaaS accounts with that licensing model, however you can create tenant DaaS accounts for each customer.
When you log into your MSP DaaS portal, citrix.cloud.com you should see options that single tenants don't see. the important one is "My Customers"
d
I see "my customers"
And a section that says single tenant customer
Which is where I see the client in trying to license without a rebuild or migration
j
yes, single tenant customers are legacy customers that got converted to the CSP licensing model, but already had a single tenant account created by Citrix. they are essentially grandfathered in, but their single tenant is managed by your CSP tenant. Net new Citrix customers don't have that option, and they have to be created as a new customer under your My Customers section.
d
So my gut feels from top is right... Migration to on prem?? This does explain why their vendor was being super "fun" to them on this renewal
Am I jumping to an inaccurate conclusion you think?
j
if using your licenses and migrate to on-prem, there is an issue that your licenses are bundled with your csp cloud portal, and the LAS licensing service is tied to your cloud tenant. The rub s that only 1 on-prem license server can be primary (active) at any given time.
sadly it's still a moving target.
d
I do already have lots of on prem license servers
For many clients
And they're LAS
j
"You can have multiple License Servers registered with the same Citrix Cloud ID (CCID) or OrgID. However, a site can be configured to point to only one License Server." - docs.citrix.com/en-us/…/license-activation-service.html
sorry, yes you can, and it should work, but I've seen some issues with multiple license servers stopping their LAS connection and requiring re-authorization at random.
the DaaS Multi-tenant administration is still ongoing in it's development. It's awkward if the customer will be managing their own deployment, but can be done, with a few limitations. currently some options are only available to the CSP tenant admins, and not the customer tenant admins.
so yes, if you want to keep it simple, and working essentially as it has for the last 5+ years on-prem will work.
just more servers to build and manage, and databases.
I'm told by a Citrix developer that they are actively working on feature parity for the CSP customer tenant portals, but it's not there yet.
things like hosting connections, and cloud connectors have to be created and managed by the CSP admins. Also some issues with published app icons, and limiting visibility to domain groups.
d
Is there a good/relatively trivial migration for the equivalent of ADC in Citrix cloud to ADC on prem? Fresh build of ADC for cvad is pretty trivial if not.. but figured I'd ask in case you happen to already know
j
but you mentioned at the beginning that they already have citrix but with another provider right?
no cloud to on-prem migration that I know of.
d
Yeah, they're wanting a full year commitment.. and they just need a couple months.. their org is moving toward AVD
j
if they already have a citrix single tenant even if managed by another vendor, and it's not CSP, then you could take it over with your csp account, if they have admin rights to their tenant
yeah so it sounds like they either are purchasing a renewal of their licensing (which requires a year commitment) or they don't have enough licenses already owned in a CSP to allocate to them for a shorter term. The CSP licenses are also a 1 year commitment, but owned by the CSP and not the customer.
d
That tracks
j
since you are also a partner, (as I am) and have CSP licensing ,Arrow is doing a webinar for license managers tomorrow about license changes coming up. Maybe reach out to your rep and see if you can get an invite.
d
Oo i may need to do that
And I'm very grateful for you sharing your knowledge
j
well until I found out we are competing for a customer..... 😉.
d
Hahaha
j
nah, gotta keep doors open. Networking.....
d
Exactly
I shall def speak highly of u in general conversation

My last 2 cents. If you are trying to take on this customer for a short term transition as they migrate to AVD, and you havent' already navigated the multi-tenant daas structure, I'd highly recommend doing a simple on-prem build out for this customer use case. If you want to do more with the multi-tenant DaaS, I'd suggest creating a customer tenant as a demo lab, and do some testing first.
d
Most definitely. This was an opportunity that's mostly trying to help a friend
I def need to put in the time to understand the DaaS though
