Hi all has anyone run Aaron parkers fslogix profile clean up scripts either the logon/logoff script or the profile cleanup script which is ran when users are not logged in and the container is not in use ? . The scripts will delete the data but does anyone know if it will compact the containers to free up the white space? I have a bunch of data in a single location within multiple users profile containers i need to delete and these scripts are perfect but i need to reduce the size of the users profile containers and free up space on backend storage https://stealthpuppy.com/fslogix/profilecleanup/

Prior to FSLogix doing compaction, Jim Moyle had some scripts that could do offline compaction, maybe you could retrofit those? Not sure that the pruning scripts did any compaction, I don't think so
But I guess if you prune them they will get compacted next time the users log out anyway....

AHH yeah got those could run that after I run the container cleanup script. I don't use the auto disk compaction got it turned off
j
I think Jim's scripts were pretty much the base for the auto compaction so should do a decent job

I tested just about everyone's script back in the day and Jim's always did the best job.
j
We use Jim script for the compaction. Great job

My pruning script will not compact the container - the pruning script runs inside the user session when the disk is mounted
c
cool thanks will run the disk compaction seperatley wasnt sure if the pruning script also did the compaction
j
Just curious.. why not use the auto disk compaction? seems to work just fine

@Aaron Parker i have successfully tested your container cleanup script and works pefectly on a couple test profile containers. I am gonna run it over weekend against the whole share does it skip containers mounted and in use ? (we are 24/7 but have a small number of users using systems over weekend) any experience on how long it takes to run for 1500 profile containers (obviosuly depends on the amount of data being deleted/storage speed). I dont want to be in a situation where the script is still running on a monday morning locking containers
j
It should run in each session separately, shouldn't it?
c
he has two scripts one you can run at logon / logoff and another which you run when users not logged on from a management box
j
AH right sorry
c
i didnt fancy using the profile cleanup script as could impact logon/log off times. Vast majority dont use citrix at weekends so was hoping i could run it but not 100% sure it skips mounted containers (we have a small number of users logged in at weekend) and how long it will roughly take
j
maybe run it against 250 and see how long that takes for a benchmark 🙂

I have a hopefully not silly question here @Aaron Parker but if the script were run per-user on folders after the redirections.xml was changed to exclude the folders we want to prune... does that force us to do this as admin instead? I have an environment that trying to mount VHDXs is a challenge on the file server so doing this per-user would make more sense... Thoughts?
a
I think you would - yes. Technically in the VHD, but overridden with redirections, so needs to be mounted offline to prune.

i ran the container cleanup script and worked perfected pruning MS office autorecovered docs from profile containers. It freed up about 2.5TB on my fslogix container share. Took pretty much whole day to run and it did skip mounted containers and moved on. I ran the container compaction script next day after the container cleanup
