Does anyone know if Citrix plans on adding ServerVDI support for Windows 11 Multi-session? Reason being we want to use one OS Layer with Win11 MS and share apps between a platform layer using Server-based VDA and one with Server VDI-based VDA similar to the environment we have now where we are using Server 2022 to accomplish the same feat. Reason we want to switch to Win11 MS is due to Win11 migration for physical machines and we want to match the same look and feel and also to switch to being able to use Windows Client CALs over RDSH CALs. Also, we don't have to wait for Server 2025's release (which should have the Win11 look and feel).

Server VDI option is still single session though. You can’t use the server VDI option with RDSH install.

Well assuming that it works the same as with Server 2022, using the ServerVDI switch allows you to use Server 2022 as a single-session VDI host without the RDSH roles installed. I guess Win11 MS has these roles installed by default which is why the ServerVDI switch doesn't work? Or is there a way to still using Win11 Multi-Session as the base OS Layer and disable the Multi-Session entitlement in the platform layer to be able to install the Workstation VDA instead and still share the same App Layers?
j
I don’t think this is possible with W11 it’s part of the OS install.
k
Yeah, I figured that was the case based on this FAQ: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-desktop/windows-multisession-faq#can-i-upgrade-a-windows-vm-to-windows-enterprise-multi-session was still hoping there was a way around it so we wouldn't have to support multiple app layers for the "same OS" even if we had to have two OS Layers. A wish list item for Citrix App Layering would be the ability to use app layers created in one OS Layer on a different OS Layer if they use the "same" underlying OS install. I know this is possible with "elastic layers", but we don't use that feature in our environment.

Yep was just reading that to make sure. Looks like you can switch from MS to SS but can’t switch back.

So that was my next experiment, testing changing the entitlement/SKU in a platform layer from MS to SS and installing the Workstation VDA. Which I know would be totally unsupported from both Citrix's and Microsoft's standpoint but would be interested to see if it works.
Just an FYI, this scenario does work even if it's totally unsupported. I tested changing the SKU back to normal Win11 Enterprise in a platform layer and was able to install Citrix Workstation VDA. The resulting compiled image works in Single-session/VDI MCS/DG and interestingly enough still claims it's using Multi-session SKU:

Good to know.

I think with the GA of Azure Stack HCI, Citrix will support multi session Win10/11 in the future too.
