You shouldn’t have to do anything. Tempe load balancer should detect it down and not send traffic to that server.
b
The LB will be removed
You stated "I have to remove one of the storefronts.." So based on that, the detection is on the NS will handle it correctly. If disable the whole LB, sure a cname would work, but might need to check and make sure the cert San want throw any errors.
No SSL so
r
Good luck
b
Why are you removing the LB? If you are just removing a Storefront server the LB doesn't need to change
b
Because the license on the VPX doesn't support LBs
r
we are going off what you put in. Which was "I currently have a Citrix NS with a LB"
b
Ok. Now I'm saying the LB isn't supported on the license hence one of the reasons there is gonna be only one storefront
j
Yeah CNAME could be updated to the same name as the VIP on the NS. but pointing to that pair. You can still have an HA SF pair, with round robbin DNS I think, but no idea how well it will work.
b
Round robin DNS is not load balancing. Please please PLEASE stop saying that
j
I agree it is not, but in his situation not sure what you are gonna do. When that box fails you are out of luck
b
Mount a HAProxy as a free load balancer.
j
I mean its best practice to throw them behind a VIP, and any infrastructure components.
Shoot yea 🙂 Go for it then
b
In saying that is a valid alternative and a load balancer. But NEVER mentioned a DNS round robin as a load balancer
j
You said "I am not licensed for LB" I wanna use one SF server how do I do that? At least that's how I read your question, I didn't realize from your question you had another LB solution in place.
That makes sense to me now
round robbin DNS as a MAYBE failover situation...maybe? is better than one server
b
? But if I have one storefront I don't need to lb anything....they connect directly to the stf
j
If that box goes down you are sol
its the access plane
b
It's not a fail over solution either. If you are accessing it thru DNS and DNS caches the IP and the server goes down, you will get a page not round
j
I haven't tried it, I am unsure if it would even work. Agreed
b
It's basic DNS. The IP get cached for stf1 on your client. Stf1 goes down. DNS doesn't monitor anything. You are still hitting stf1 Ip because it's cached and you will never reach stf2. And even if you do.flush your DNS cache, due to round robin, you might still get stf1 Ip because the previous client got stf2 ip
j
Makes sense. Sounds like 1 SF box for you
b
No. I'm saying this to YOU. Do not mention DNS round robin as a load balancing solution. Do not mention DNS round robin as a fail over solution. Because it does not work like that
j
Thanks for the info sir. I will not anymore. Good points made.
c
Round-robin DNS is absolutely a sort of load balancing, it's just not a good one if you have any other method available. I understand you are trying to be specific but telling somebody "Round robin DNS is not load balancing" is incorrect.
b
No, it isn't. Round robin is just that: 1,2,1,2,1,2....it does not check for load, real usage, availability, etc.... It is not load balancing or fail over technique. And like I mentioned, it suffers from client side caching. STOP SPREADING FUD
c
I understand you are passionate but you are incorrect. If you want to (correctly) tell people that it sucks then tell them that it sucks, but do not tell them something demonstrably untrue.
j
Yep DNS round robin is load balancing, 100%. Not as fancy as a proper load balance mainly because the sticky session but you can configure a VIP with no session persistence and use round robin for the backend load-balancing, it will do the same job than DNS round Robin. It works and is useful in some case, e.g. LB a proxy.
b
let's setup a DNS round robin with 100 web servers with a hello world html page . 5 clients connect every day. Monday: srv1, srv2, srv3, srv4, and srv5, what servers will the next clients connect to on Tuesday? The question is simple don't make up "well in windows DNS server you can setup the option blah blah" just answer the question 😊
b
I think people are genuinely trying to help, but the conversation has veered well off topic. We can differ on opinions in a professional manner.

In what channel can the person answer the question I asked? To like you mentioned, not go offtopic
j
Keep your LB, Reduce your TTL of your lbsf.local.domain and point it to the SF you keep. Make sure it works. Then you can remove your LB or rollback if it doesn't work. I would do this out of prod hours in case of.

This thread is a master class on how to post a question in a free community channel and in a matter of an hour or two make it so nobody wants to try and help you ever again. Nice work mate. Kudos. Good Luck on your single storefront server and working through that. The channel you are looking for to get that answered isn't around here with that attitude.
