anyone ever built a nutanix CE cluster based on dell r710/720? dell raid controllers seem to be a bit tricky. undecided if it's worth the time/trouble and $$$ to try or just stick with XenServer 😉

No but I really want to. I have some of that hardware laying around. I think for the SSD you need a specific controller model. I forget which one.

PERC H700 and H710p here, seems to be some sort rebranded LSI

That's exactly what those are - along with the custom Dell RAID controller stuff and inflated price tag. 😠

We have SSDs on older R710/720 no problem. Perc 6,7,8 work fine.

@User do you run serial ATA or SAS in your 710/720?

Actually, the controllers will do a mix of either or. We have both SAS and SATA, mostly SAS.

"The real problem here is the raid card, perc6ir is currently no good for SSDs in a nutanix install, youll need something that will do IT mode/passthrough which seems to be every other raid controller except perc6ir"

"... so look for something with a h700 or similar", seems that the h700/710p should work so. 🙂

The 7XX series is much newer, so should certainly work I would imagine. We have mixed SAS/SATA on an R715 that has the same Perc 6 I think as the 710. Even though it's a SAS controller, it has SATA capabilities.

Ah, good point. Only the old H310 does passthrough -- maybe the newest 7XX model, I'm not sure. That or buy an LSI controller that does support passthrough and use it. Works in standard PCI slots. I'd have to look up the model we use for our SDS solution.
