This is the QNAP I have. It can be found cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/TS-531X-8G-US-ARM-based-Hardware-Encryption-10G-ready/dp/B01N678MQE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1522064400&sr=8-2&keywords=TS-531X

Awesome, already have Synology & QNAP, doesn't need yet another brand (and QNAP has 2x 10GbE). So how's the performance compared to local SSD storage? What kind of disks do you have in there?

For the ubnt switch. I saw in the forums there is a $43 sfp+ to rj45 that works. Haven’t tested yet.

Performance seems really good to me 🙂. I don't have anything with a local SSD to compare though.

WTF, that shouldn't have happened. I you did it through the new system? Blame it on that. Also you could just go VMUG Advantages

AFF, you guys are killing me. The QNAP, Switch & Disk is $2500 and another $2500 for SM with 2 TB Samsung 960 Pro (without memory and SSD)

Why so much local storage for the SM?
  • u

The SM's is going to replace my NUC/Skulls's. So the local storage is for running XenServer nested for 3/4 students per SM

I have found the Xeon D boards to work very well. I do a custom build with the 12 core motherboard and SCE300 case to add GPU. Also allows me 2 2.5" drives and an NVME drive.

Yeah, the limitation is as always the CPU, so that will decide if 3 or 4 per SM. That being said I think the magic number is 3 XenServer with 40GB of memory each. That will be nice both for the students and the CPU
