A great uncle of mine supposedly -- when he needed a lot more work space -- resorted to using what he called "the great table," which meant the floor! πŸ˜†

I am currently building a new portable setup, i have managed to workout a few things want some feedback on one idea in particular. The overall theme of it is a hybrid cloud, running a few nucs as onPrem and a super micro E300-8D setup as an Azure stack. The concepts work well enough (testing on the heat and noise to come) but i have been thinking about adding a full graphics card to the setup, as an external car to a nuc through hacking the psu power supply and powering it seperately and cabling it in with a pcie riser and converter.... has anyone tried to add graphics card externally to a decased nuc this way before??

You can do this with low profile, half height card with Xeon-D in custom case. You can use the setup that the E300-8D has inside but need the bigger case and riser. I have this with AMD WX4100 but also looking at an NVIDIA Tesla P4. I also have the 12 core motherboard model. The case is CSE-300/SCE300. You will need a bigger power supply you can order off Amazon.

The nuc option sounds interesting. Just wondering how you would mount it. I assume case less/custom case?

i am going to do it with an M60 and the new P series, the mounting will be down the side of the plexi rig you may have seen previously, 3mm plexi with spacers with 2 nucs per sheet. The cards will go down the side vertically to make the cabling easier and then fans blowing through the whole rig. The E300 will be separate and run as the Azure stack, in between will be 2 edgerouters and 10Gb switches to simulate perimeters and internal external, between the 2 setups. All nucs will be bare no cases and the whole setup will fit into an onbaord case, slightly bigger than the 15 inch one i had previously, except this time a hard case

working on a single power supply for the nucs, single one for 300 and maybe a seperate one for the GPUs, so 3 in total

I’ve been looking for a way to power multiple Xeon D boards. What are you going to do to power the 300?

Netonix make a 1GB switch which can run from a variable AC rail of 9v - 48v so was thinking to get them or for the 10GB something ubiquiti mostl ikely... has to be small enough and be able to run decased

not sure on the 300... i was going to give it its own power supply for now but i have a bunch of DC to 19V power supplies for multi machine ability...

I know you could go with Ubnt 10G switch. They now sell 1Gb rj45 sfps for $14.50 except no poe.
