What do you think about org design? How does one go about it? When should you start thinking about it consciously?

It’s a tricky one. Org. design (by definition) seems to suggest that people will start specializing and that will slowly grow (descend?) into silo-ization. Post Series A/ B, investors expect and demand systems and well-thought through org. design. The general idea is by then, the company has an identity independent of the founders and should survive on its own. Every company need not get acquired or have an IPO; many will just ‘hang around’ and that is because they have some sort of org. design in place. My recommendation is that the founders should know the roadmap along with timelines and milestones. The actual implementation of the systems and org. design could wait till Series A/B or 150+ employees.
You may also want to think about and consider the philosophy of holacracy. Again, it can be seen as pure hype. Many orgs. may not be ready to adopt holacracy. I genuinely believe smaller and younger companies should seriously consider giving it a shot if their domain and nature of work allows for it. Like Blinkist, the company, you can come iup with your own version of holacracy and not stick to the traditional definition of the holacracy management system.
