Oh, this is a tough one and I'm not sure if a clear answer has been found yet. But I do remember that the Karnataka High Court had recently ruled that an IT employee without supervisory responsibilities is a workman.
Not sure if that is being used as a precedent in other states or if it has been challenged.

Depending on the job duties and salary of the IT employee, it is to be categorised.

hi @Malini Lakshman the definition of workman applies to employees working in the IT sector as well, any employee who is an individual contributor without any supervisory function is termed as a workman, Designations and Job titles cannot be taken into account here. some one with a Manager Title acting as an individual contributor can also fall under the category of a workman.
the below article explains it further.
Hope this helps.
