What informal procedure would you follow when letting go of someone over performance issues? Say, you've to inform your remote team of 30-35 people over slack. • Do you just disable their account & then chose to inform the team after they have left? ( Not in favour of doing this, but I've seen companies do this, I find it pretty non empathetic ) • Do you send out a public message while they are in the company, bid a farewell? ( Is yes ↓ ) ◦ In the first message itself when the ex-employee is part of slack, would you ▪︎ Let the team know that they're being let go over performance issues. ▪︎ Skip the reason, send out a short message & maybe later inform the team in detail. Let me know if you would do anything else.

We do this -> Skip the reason, send out a short message & maybe later inform the team in detail.

Makes sense, had the same in mind, thanks @Kartik Mandaville

@Prakhar - Given that skipping the reason is mostly a preferred choice, whenever I would have had to encounter a similar situation I usually ask them the following questions - 1. I discuss with them what we are going to tell the team (they decided to move on for other opportunities, wanted to take a break, etc.). This is important so that it doesn't become awkward for them if someday someone directly talks to them and brings up the topic. 2. Everytime we have had to let someone go because of a performance reason, we have made sure they do not feel that they are a bad person. It is just the nature of circumstances that led to this decision. Maybe they might be a star at some other company. Hence, we make sure to make them feel the same way while performing any communication around this and we ask them directly if they would like a farewell. A farewell in our case is usually a virtual/small get together with their team. This also makes them feel respected. Whenever they have not been comfortable with it, we don't do it. 3. In regards to letting the team know, once point-1 is addressed, the manager preferably DMs other members on his team about it. If your team is large, this can be done on a team's group channel as well instead of DM. We follow it with letting the team know to feel free to reach out to the manager if they have any questions about this event.
