### Answer
 A chat ends based on the `end_chat_after_silence_ms` configuration parameter [(1) ](<https://docs.retellai.com/api-references/get-chat-agent-versions>) [(2) ](<https://docs.retellai.com/api-references/update-chat-agent>) . This setting determines how long the chat will wait after the agent's last message before automatically closing due to user inactivity .

The minimum value allowed is 120,000 ms (2 minutes) , and the maximum is 259,200,000 ms (72 hours) . By default, this is set to 3,600,000 ms (1 hour) .

When the chat automatically closes, you can configure a custom `auto_close_message` to display to the user .
