@AI Evy where can I adjust how fast an agent responds after a person stayed silent
a
Thanks for tagging me @K Rudy. I'll look through relevant sources and get back to you shortly.
### Answer You can adjust how quickly the agent responds after user silence using the
reminder_trigger_ms
parameter. [(1) ]() This parameter, set in milliseconds, triggers a reminder for the agent to speak if the user has been silent for the specified duration after agent speech. - **Default value**: 10,000 ms (10 seconds) - **Requirement**: Must be a positive number Additionally, you can control how many times the agent reminds the user with `reminder_max_count`: - Default is 1 (remind once) - Set to 0 to disable reminders entirely You can also adjust
responsiveness
(value 0–1) to control how quickly the agent responds in general—lower values mean the agent waits more and responds slower, while higher values mean faster exchanges. These settings can be configured via the API when creating or updating your voice agent.

@AI Evy but here is that setting in prompt based agents?
a
Thanks for the follow-up, @K Rudy. I'll get back to you soon.
### Answer --- The settings like
reminder_trigger_ms
,
reminder_max_count
, and
responsiveness
are configured at the agent level, not within the Retell LLM (prompt-based) configuration itself. For Single/Multi Prompt agents (Retell LLM) , the LLM API endpoints ( [(1) ]() , [(2) ]() ) handle prompt-related settings such as
begin_message
,
general_prompt
,
states
,
model
, and
begin_after_user_silence_ms
. [(1) ]() [(2) ]() The
begin_after_user_silence_ms
parameter is available in the Retell LLM configuration—it controls how long the AI waits before beginning the conversation if the agent is set to wait for the user to speak first. [(1) ]() However, the
reminder_trigger_ms
and
responsiveness
settings are part of the voice agent configuration, not the LLM configuration. These are set when creating or updating the agent itself (via the agent API) , regardless of whether you're using a Single/Multi Prompt or Conversation Flow response engine. I don't have the specific agent API documentation in my current sources to show you the exact endpoint, but you can find these settings in the agent creation/update API or in the Dashboard under your agent's settings.
