Hey tribe! Has anyone booked a .so domain? Where did you book it from?
c
I haven’t booked. Last time I checked, its available in namecheap.

Is it not available in Google domain?

Haven't booked either but have been working in the domain industry. Like Ramesh mentioned above it's available on Namecheap as well as other providers like Dynadot (slightly cheaper than Namecheap), 101domains, Gandi, etc. Google Domains don't have quite a lot of the ccTLDs available

If you are thinking of registering one, don’t. You’ll lose access anytime since it's only for somalia residents or businesses which have a connection to somalia
For that matter, most country specific TLDs should be avoided

^What’s the source on ‘losing access anytime’?

@creamy-sundown-74328 what about notion.so..?
c
Every .so domain (or any others that use any country specific domains) are under a looming threat all the time. You can look up the .ly and .sy controversies.
Specifically for .so, here are the rules ->
In general, most country TLDs are meant for specific reasons, mostly governed by inept governments and they can be taken down anytime those govts think of enforcing their rules (or manytimes even other countries can force like in the case of syria with US sanctions)

Thanks folks! Yes. Was available on Namecheap. I should have checked there first. Isn’t available at a lot of places. Agree with @creamy-sundown-74328 - the .so domain has already had a few controversies earlier - one of their registrars went defunct and they stopped for a year or so (not sure if the TLD went down or only new registrations was stopped). They have changed registrars a couple of times recently. Haha .. but the worst part is it is quite expensive at $90 - so too much for a random side project even if I was okay to risk the recent history of it. Thanks again!

Usually it's just new registrations that are stopped. If you look up GoDaddy they stopped selling .SO domains somewhere in 2015. They only allow transfers of .SO domains. Same is the case with a few other registrars as well. The backend that supports the TLD has changed and most registrars simply stop supporting the TLD to avoid the hassle
